I have a 18.5 Hunter with a wing keel that has minor rust on her. I am going to sand away the rust then paint it with barrier coat followed by bottom paint, the only problem is the underside of the keel. I need advice on how to get to the bottom of the keel, when its on a trailer without using a travel lift? Or maybe I should just forget about the underside as the first time I run up on some sand I will just scrap of the paint?

Hey R.W.

I've been reading here and elsewhere about the kind of superhuman effort that it takes to properly prep and paint the infamous iron wing keel. That's why I'm not even attempting to tackle it now. Blister repairs are taking much longer than I had expected, and the sailing season is rapidly disappearing. I've already missed a couple of races, and despite the extra drag of a poorly faired keel, it'll just have to wait until summer when the boat won't be in use. I'd rather sail slowly than not be sailing at all. BTW, having used Interlux products for the blister repair and barrier coating, I have to agree that they have a pretty good system.
