I am considering a professional keel modification on a 45 foot aft cockpit SV. She has a cast iron keel, bolted on. Total displacement is roughly 25,500 lbs with roughly 10500 lbs of ballast. It's a full keel with a little over 6 feet of draft. I've found a company that will cast the new 'twin torpedo' end piece. I'm aware of the pros and cons concerning stability, possible loss of re-sale value etc...I want to remove roughly 3000 to 3200 lbs of keel. My question is: how to calculate fairly precisely how much of the keel to remove in order to equal that weight, and how to cut a straight line through cast iron? Any helpful suggestions?
