Lead keels on Cherubini H25s
All the 'real early' Hunter 25s (Mk 1; '72-76') had lead keels. They were Cherubini boats, designed by my dad with input from Bob Seidelmann, whom we have to thank for getting my dad the commission to design all the other '70s Hunters. (Call it a boat designed by a 'committee' if you will-- even I was in on it! But if you know my dad's work you'd know it as a Cherubini boat.)Iron is too passe for anything built in the '70s but cheaper boats (i.e. MacGregors). It would be nothing but problems by this decade anyway.Like CharlieH I have some cruddy abrasion/corrosion damage on the side of my fin keel too. Someone in the past made the mistake of fiberglassing over the lead. This resulted in water retention and subsequent metal breakdown. I have ground it all off and will fill it with WEST/Aerosil before fairing, painting with primer and then applying bottom paint. That's all anyone else in the industry would do too. It is not worth worrying about the minor loss of lead from such pits and depressions. The boat will be stable enough. The important thing is to get it filled and appropriately sealed so that such hassles do not recur.JC 2H-25 DianaBurlington NJ
