I just purchased a 1983 Cataline 22 - and I have general keel questions.. 1. How do I tell if I have a LEAD or CAST IRON keel 2. What type of anode do I need - one is for lead one is for cast iron 3. My keel has lots of bumps on it - what is the best process for fairing the keel, coating it, and making it smooth again - can I put epoxy on it?

You got rust, you got iron.

You got the summer for fun - dont fret about what's below the water until next haul out. Many threads on the web for getting the perfect keel - if your so inclined. Biggest trick is to apply epoxy within the hour after you sand. I used Interprotect 2000 - its a great product.

C22 Keels

It wasn't until just a few years ago that the New Lead keels were put on the C22 Mark 2 Unless the keel has been replaced you have the cast iron keel. You'll need to take it off the boat to cover and fair it. Once off the boat have it sand blasted then as Guy says immediately get epoxy or rust preventive on it. You can then start the process of covering it with epoxy. Its best to use a template to get both sides the same.
