When I pulled my 1976 25 out of the water this fall, I noticed a rusty look in the bottom paint running the length of the keel. This ran, from the extreme bottom, up approximately 1 foot for the length of the keel. The keel is lead and has always has been in fresh water. Any thoughts? Also suggestions as to handling the problem.

Is the paint brittle?

Are you certain its rust? Is it possible its gunk stuck in the cracks in the bottom paint as it get brittle? That would be my guess. Use a screwdriver or spackle knife to see how easily the paint comes off. My guess is its old and ready for replacement.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Sediment

The rust stains could be from sediment (leaves) at the bottom of your marina.Chris

Rusty keel

Thanks for the response - you could be on track. I painted the keel last spring but did not remove the paint layers since there was no flaking. Thanks again i'll check the paint (when it warms up!) since the boat is hi and dry.While I have you - do you know anything about centerboard work. I have not checked to see what condition the cable connection/centerboard is in and feel it should be done. I'm the third owner and pretty sure it hasn't been done before and probably due. I'm not sure if I should attempt this myself or take to marina services. Any thoughts about me attempting the inspection and work if required.I'm going to put this out on the net for suggestions -Thanks -

Bottom sediments

Thanks for your thoughts - you could be right on the target, since my marina is no place to swim or touch the bottom, certainly not pristine waters.I painted the bottom last spring but with the changing tide the boat sets in the muck a good amount of time. I think I'm about ready to remove layers of paint since I've never stripped the keel and that may go along way to removing the stain.Again, I appreciate your idea and will follow up.
