Our keel depth is 7'8". If we take our boat to the Carribean (one day), will we be limited to the various harbours, ports and tourist locations? Thanks

In a word Yes

There will be places you cannot go. However there are many tha you can sitll enjoy. If you have a dink then you could visit just about anywhere just anchor out in deeper water. Fair Winds Cap'n Dave

A long time ago I was talking to

Hal Roth and his responce to my 4 1/2 foot draft was that it would allow me to get stuck closer to shore.

Deffinately YES!!!

With that draft, plan on anchoring off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. and dinghy your way to the Bahamas. When you get further east in the Carribean, it will be less of a problem, but a problem none the less. As Capt'n Dave said " just anchor out in deeper water." However, deeper water may not be far enough inside a bay or cove to get good protection. Given some of the advantages of a deep draft, i certainly wouldnt let it deter me from the trip. It just means that anchoring places will require some additional planning. Good luck, and go for it.

I was just looking in "Reeds"

Their pilot for the Bahamas is extensive and indicate that there is adaquate deep water anchorage in most of the marinas but that during the fishing tournaments they fill up fast.

The Bahamas are in the Atlantic,

you'll be fine in the deep water harbors of the Caribbean.

Bahamas... Carribean or Atlantic?

Although the Bahamas are in the Atlantic they are considered Carribean Islands, both by themselves as well as by the U.S. Govt. I didnt make the rules.
