Keel Damage?

When returning to the marina one night, I solidly hit something submerged. Once back out into clear water, I dove to check for damage. I pulled a 3" x 2" piece of glass of the leading edge of the keel, about half way down the length of it. My proposed action is to weight until fall to pull the boat, then drill a small hole up into the glass to allow the water to drain out of the saturated glass, then repair as necessary. I feel it's best to take this course since the boat has been in the water for a week now that the damage has been done and the glas is most likely already saturated. As a side note, on the piece I pulled off, I can see a blunt spot on the glass where I hit something. I am thinking it was a large submereged log. I did not see any physical damage to the keel itself.

Keel Damage

I would consult with the manufacturer of your vessel or an expert in the field. You don't want any delamination to occur if thats possible. Your insurance company may even offer a free haul-out in order to protect the boat from further damage.

I would haul now.

If you see exposed glass below the water line I would haul as soon as possible to begin drying and to reglass, barrier coat, and repaint the damaged area. The longer the boat stays in the water with the bare glass exposed the further the water may migrate into the glass between the gelcoat. May turn into a major repair in a few months.

Haul now

John there is probably a clause in your insurance policy called Sue and Labor, What that simply means is that you have the responsibility to prevent any further damage to the vessel. I would call your insurance company and talk to them. They will want the boat hauled and let a surveyor look at the damage and then go from there. Good luck Charlie

Haul now!!

Same thing happened to me. When the boat was hauled we found two stringers had cracked. Repairs were costly but covered by insurance. Call your insurance company.
