Well, I have a crack that goes around my keel...the surveyer seem to thing that the keel is secure, and a good bead of 5200 will get me on the water. a fiberglass repair man said the same. I'd love to drop the keel about an inch to put a good bead around the area then retorque the keel bolts. set the seal nice and tight. clean it and repaint the area of repair. What I'd like to know is this the right way, and is 5200 the best product for the job. has anyone had to do this at anytime and is it worth the trouble. any advice will be considered. thanks.

The better it is cleaned, the better the seal!
When you apply the 5200, snug the bolts and let the 5200 cure. then torque them. You will not only have a bond but a gasket. Do it! r.w.landau

Joe, Since you are considering droping the keel to make a complete seal, consider dropping the keel to evaluate both surfaces. That is the glass surface on the underside of the boat and the upper surface of the keel. You may be lucky and find both surfaces in good repair. However, on older boats you may find that some repair now would prevent future serious issues. Is there any corrosion on the bolts? There are several new products out there that mix with corrosion and prevent more corrosion. Also, you can check for any water pentration into the keel and fix defects. If the boat bottom needs some work, you might put on a layer or two of epoxy to prevent future water intrusion. Again, since you are lowering the keel, why not lower or take off to do complete evaluation and any repairs needed. Ed K 26

Joe, You mentioned 5200, that is a permanent, first time last time repair product. Futhermore when affixed to fiberglass surfaces it does not flex. I would look at other products to repair with, such as 4200, BoatLife, and several products made for underwater use. Ed K 26
