Keel Construction diagram

That looks strange. Is it a void? Or is it a void filled with foam?
If the latter, why is there a drain into it? Trev (V2915 -Mystic Rose)

On the Yahoo files section is a drawing of the Series I keel
construction, showing the bilge and the void below.
Here's a quick link to a copy I have on my server:

Yup, it's a foam-filled void. I don't think there is a 'factory'
drain plug down there. On mine a P.O. had drilled a hole and put a
14"-20 machine screw back in to plug it. I found it when taking off
all the bottom paint, otherwise I would have missed it!

When I had the boat at home I pulled the screw and about a cup of
water dribbled out. I stuffed a piece of cotton string into the hole
and let it hang down below the keel to wick out any more moisture.
When the screw went back in it was liberaly coated with sealant!

Interesting drawing Peter. For those who don't know, the later series had a deeper bilge and a wider keel. When we bought Oops (formerly Sonya) a wrecked series 2 we had hoped to use her fuel tank in Lyric. The tank we removed from Oops sat on top of a fiberglass box and when removed I couldn't reach the bottom of the bilge. Lyrics bilge is easy to get to the bottom of. when we tried to fit the series 2 tank into Lyric it was to wide to get into the bilge. Just a bit of trivia for other owners. PS to my last post. Take a look at the keel drawing Peter posted. When you are hauled you must be supported on three blocks. One fore, one aft and one in the middle. The yard in Mexico moved Lyric while we were away and supported her fore and aft only. The aft end of the keel can not take the weight. We did have damage in the form of buckling. It was fixable but it took several took several days. WaltTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comFrom: leecht@...: Fri, 29 Feb 2008 13:17:48 -0500Subject: RE: [AlbinVega] Keel Construction diagram

Do Series 3 Vegas have to be supported at 3 points also when lifted or is the keel construction substantial enough to only require fore and aft support under the keel?

Ive lifted all typpes of vegas on just two points over teh last 18 years and never a problem!!

Just lifted mine and again no problem.

When boats are lifted it is always on two strap points.

Cheers

Hi Steve and Patrick. Lifting is fine but setting it down on the hard is where we had the problem. With blocks under the extreme fore and aft sections of the keel and the jack stands in sand we developed a few Wrinkles in the glass by the rudder shoe. Big enough to need repairing. Of course getting the yard to do it was impossible. WaltTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comFrom: steve@...: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 13:05:37 +0000Subject: Re: [AlbinVega] Keel Construction diagram
