I am looking at 22-25ft Catalinas and noticing all the different keel styles..... I know each must have its pro and cons and I would like to hear what you the owners think. Any info on the advantages of the fixed, swing and wing keels...will be sailing on lakes and not open ocean......Thanks for your help Bill

Keel Types

After 20 plus years of having a C-25 and spending a couple of years reading diverse opinions on the C25/250 National association site. I've come to following conclusions. 1) What is best is what fits the owners needs. 2) Each of the Keel designs works and provides a set of advantages. That being stated the following points are frequently (sometimes) agreed to. The fins point higher than the Wings. The swings are faster off the wind, and point almost as high as the fins. The wings and swings are easier to trailor than the fins. The Swings are potentially self-sinking when the cable breaks, and require annual haulout and inspection of key components. If you are stuck on a sand bank it is easier to get off with a swing. How all you have to do is figure out which advantages are most valuable to you.
