Hi again, I will be buying a Hunter 23 and using a trailer that I had for a Catalina 22. I seek guidance and answers to the following: 1. What is the Keel clearance for the H23 with fixed keel on a trailer and how is it measured? 2. My trailer is a single axle model with 4000 lb capacity is this OK. Your answers and guidance is appreciated. Simon

keel clearance

I am not sure what you are refering to when you say keel clearance, but, the keel needs to sit on a wooden platform on the trailer, about 70 percent of the boats weight is resting on the keel with the remaining 30 percent on the bunks, when you say keel clearance it has me confused, I think the 400o weight should be ok , I have not owned a catalina 22 but I thought it was a swing keel and the boat sat on bunks, Let us know what it is you are asking , take care Mike BAcome

Keel Clearance clarification

Mike my Catalina 22 has a swing keel that rests on the platform that you mentioned, but the Hunter 23 has a fixed keel, I have not been able to measure the Hunter keel as it is far from me. I am going to try to have the seller do it for me. The catalina keel sits 12 inches from the bottom of the hull. The Hunter appears to be around 18-24 inches. I need to raise my bunks accordingly. How much is the question. Thanks, Simon

the 23 draws exactly 2'3

...or 27" total. I'm curious to find out if your bunks have 15 inches or more of travel for this adjustment, because mine seem pretty tall. I would also suggest checking the archives for the correct tongue weight for the H23 to use as a frame of reference. Good luck Brian C h23 kickin' back

keel clearance

Simon , I thought this might be what you were asking but was not sure, I guess I did not realize that the catalina rested on the hull, so I do understand you however I can t answer the question as the boat is put away for the winter, as was posted the h23 does draw 27 inches of water but that is a figure from the water line to the botton of the keel and the bunks are below the water line , this is going to vary depending on where you measure it , as the bunks follow the curve of the hull, sorry I cant be of help good luck , MIke Bacome

trailer measurments are . . .

Simon, I got the following measurements off my 1986 h23, sitting on its trailer (factory original): 1) The root of the keel is 15 1/2" above the board. Note that the hull curves down to the root, so the board sits roughly 17 or 17 1/2" down from the hull, depending where you measure it. I used the root because its' a repeatable measuring point. 2) There are three supports for the bunks. The first is immediatly forward of the cross-beam holding the front of the board (that the keel sits on). It is 20" above the level of the board. The second (middle) is 54" further back (meas. from front to front) and stands 20" above the level of the board. The third (back) is 39 1/2" behind the second support, and stands 21 1/2" tall. I measured bunk hight as the hight of the inside (lower) top edge of the bunk, down to the top of the cross-beam, less 1" for the thickness of the board. Hope this helps.
