Hi all, Does anyone happen to have any experience with upwind sailing on a Pearson K/CB 36-2 with the board up? I am planning to charter a 36-2, and I think the K/CB might be locked in the up position for chartering (haven't yet confirmed this). It's not like I'm racing, or buying the boat, but I'll be on board for a couple of weeks and would like to be able to move upwind when I need to, at least reasonably well. My assumption is that upwind performance is negatively affected, I just don't know how substantial it will be. Thanks, J

You should have no problem beating with the board up. The board is about 300 lbs of fiberglass and does nothing for stability. You will slide to leaward a bit but if you are not racing you will not notice it. We seldom lower the board on our 36-2 except in our club races. Just cruising , we ignore it unless we need to balance the helm in some winds. Bill Shaw, the designer of the boat, said this in one of his interviews: Beating - In light air, down all the way. Strong wind, raise as needed to balance helm. Off wind - Beam reach to close hauled, 1/2 to 3/4 down. Broad reach, 1/4 to 1/2 down. Running - Up or lower some to stabilize helm and boat. Have fun. We love our P36-2. Dave s/v Ariel
