keel bolt size

I recently purchased a 1981 swing keel c22. I've heard so much about checking the swing keel pivot pin and bolts. I tried all my socket but none fits into the bolt hole. Does anyone know exactly what size the bolt is and what is the right socket size to use.Thanks,Marcial CanalsImagine

Thin Wall Socket

Don't remember the size, but for sure it takes a thin wall socket. They are generally available at auto parts stores.

Size = 5/16

Marcial: The Cat 22 tech manual in a note by Dick King says the bolts are stainless steel, 5/16 x 1 1/4 x 18 hex head machine bolt and a stainless lock washer. He advises removing only one bolt at a time, then replacing it with a new one, then go on to the next. Of major importance is NOT to overtighten when you replace them. If they break, they are very hard steel to drill for ez-out extraction. Some use epoxy glue on the head, or loc-tight on the threads to help them stay in place. Another Dick K.

hello marcial. When I removed the bolts from my keel to refinish it, one of the bolts snapped off and required drilling,taping and helicoiling it,so be ready just in case.Good luckjohn
