Keel Backing Plates???

Hello everyone.I just thought I'd tap into the vast knowledge base of HOW.I'm considering a purchase of a 1987 Hunter 26.5. I currently own a 1986 Hunter 23.While examining the 26.5 that is for sale, I lifted up the aft bilge inspection cover on the cockpit floor to take a look at the keel bolts. There appear to be two 1"x7" aluminum backing plates running port to starboard, with keel bolts running thru them. The front bolts do not appear to have these backing plates, only the two aftmost keel bolts. I checked w/Hunter Customer Service, and they were unaware of any backing plates such as these. Any comments?-Mark

None of the 26.5 boats neverhad keel backing plates. I would stronly suggest a survey if considering purchasing this boat.crazy Dave

Thanks Dave. I'm also going to take a look at a 2nd 26.5 in this area. I would tend to think these plates are not factory set-up, but I want to be sure.-Mark

we were talking about keels and backing plates. there might be a misunderstanding on the part of the owner.I had a problen with the keel moving on a hunter 25. I was told that I should scrap the boat by some very knowledgeable people,at least I thought they were.I called Hunter Marine and they told me with a molded fiberglass hull, it is normal to have some movement. You may have encountered an owner who having seen the keel move,tried to stop it.Survey is a good idea though.Watch for stress cracks,thats the key to real trouble.
