Hunter 32 Vision Bay City
I Just purchased a 1990 Vision 32 last fall. I am going to have the current bottom redone because of some of the bottom paint has peeled off. Also I should have the keel sandblasted because rust is showing up on it. Is there another way to clean up the rusted keel and remove the current bottom paint that won't be so messy? I was going to have it done by the place I purchased the boat from but they seem to think that sand blasting and soda washing would be messy. I don't want old bottom paint dust to be all over my deck which I would think it would be hard to clean up. Any suggestion or am I worried to much about the cleanup?
Thanks,
The Goose

G: Don't think you have rust on the keel. I may be mistaken but the Vision models were lead (as far as I know).

If you don't like what the marina has to say, can't you find another one to do the job? There isn't any reason that your boat can't be tented to prevent bottom paint dust from getting all over your boat and the others around it too.

Thanks Steve, I better call Hunter and hear what they say it is made of. Maybe they can give me some suggestions. I do have pictures. If I can figure out how to send them I will.
Thanks again

G: I stand corrected. I just checked out the Specs from this site. It does list the keel as Iron! You should still contact them unless it really looks like it is an iron rust bucket.

I think your analysis of sandblasting the iron keel is really the best way to go. You can also use a grinder to get it down to brite metal. Interlux has a process that they suggest to redo the iron keel. Once you get it cleaned up it should not be a big deal from year to year. There are products on the market that will "turn the rust back to iron/steel", but I suggest you do it right and worry about patching it up as required in the future.

You should worry about the cleanup. Make sure you put plastic down and wear a re-breather and complete cover ups to protect yourself. Your keel is iron and will always rust as a reaction to the bottom paint. I have a Hunter 33.5 and it has an iron keel. I did a lot of research with Interlux and other companies to make sure I was using the best bottom paint. The anti fouling paint used to protect the boats has a copper copolymer and will act as a battery when it comes in contact the the iron. Contact the maker of the anti fouling paint of your choice and talk to them about the best course of action. It is a big job, but so is replacing a 4000 lb keel! Best of luck!

Your boat will be filthy after u do bottom, so figure on doing a compound and wax on all above boot stripe.
