Has anyone had their keel bolts checked. I have a 32 year old boat with a cast Iron keel. I have no leaks and no indication of any problems. Do I wait until something happens or go for preventitive maintenence Bob Fox 1975 P26W #76 Whitecap Marblehead MA

inspect

You should be able to get a pretty good sense by inspection. Are they corroded, rusted? Or clean and greased?

Replaced mine.......

Bob, I have a 1972 Pearson 26. I bought it in 2000 and the seller showed me a receipt for 6 of the 8 keel bolts replaced in 1996. You will note that there is one bolt at each end of the keel and 3 pair evenly spaced. The forward pair were not replaced due to a cross piece of the floor board just above them. They are rusted and old but the others are shiny and bright. Very clean. I had a surveyor tell me 8 bolts was over kill for my boat and the keel bolts should last another 10 years. The new ones appear to be larger than the pair not replaced. Those are the only things holding that keel on so I would replace yours ASAP! David
