Would anyone know of anywhere to find good used gear (deck tackle, blocks, shackles, sheets, halyards)? I'm in north florida. Are there any places that have this type of stuff salvaged from Katrina damaged yachts? thanks much Bob

The banks have loans and they own the boats now that the insurance will not pay. Also the insurance companies end up with them from time to time.

I think they were trashed.
I have seen literally thousands of boats salvaged from Katrina, but other than locals hunting for parts and stripping boats in the marrsh areas, I havent seen anyone salvaging parts. Loose items hanging around were thrown on the deck of any boat at random before the auctions. If you think about it, it would be too expensive for anyone to go there just for parts. Start off with no place to stay, if they brought their own RV, there was still no gas or electric at first. If you got through all of that...whats your time worth?. And then, if you bid on the salvaged boats and stripped them, you were still responsible for removing the boat from its location. That in itself could cost more than all of the parts are worth. This is just my own theory because like many others, I too asked myself.....where are all the salvaged parts?

There is one marine salvage/secondhand store in Pensacola called the Scurvy Dog. Although most of his inventory is on consignment and probably not hurricane related, there is a fair amount of things including blocks, heads, winches, sails, and numerous other items to see. Located on the southwest side of Pensacola, Scurvy Dog is not that hard to find....give him a call. Good Luck

I live in Slidell, where Katrina hit pretty good. I think most of the good stuff is already gone, dealers have jumped in and grabbed most of it. But as Tony said earlier, beware. You buy the boat for the parts, you will be responsible for removing the hull. I would be very, very careful. Some of these boats have been under water a long time. Some friends of mine waited over six months before their boat was found and raisesd. I also found while looking for a boat, that there are many out there who don't tell the truth. Matter of fact, I just bought a boat in New Jersey, because all I could find on the Gulf coast was just junk. Sailortonyb replaced his boat with one in Florida. So just BEWARE
