I feel really bad trying to take advantage of such an awful situation but I can't help but think about all the boats that katrina left in her wake. I believe it will be one of the most flooded markets of salvaged boats and parts that we will ever see and I want to know where I can buy this stuff. I want to find a roller reefing system for my O'Day 22, an outboard for it and whatever other stuff will be sitting around after the insurance companies declare it a total loss. I am also looking for an outboard for my motorboat but doubt I will be able to find a 200hp honda outboard. Does anyone know where to go to find this stuff? Do you think it will end up on ebay? Thanks, Steve

Salvage

I lost my Hunter 340 to Katrina. It is extensively damaged and up on land. The boat is a total loss, and the marine surveyor who acted as adjuster said there was no salvage value. The Boat is in a subdivision in Biloxi Mississippi. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of beached boats. I think FEMA is removing the total loss boats along with other debris. But as far as salvage, the looters have already stripped my boat. So there should be a healthy black market of all manner of marine gear. ajp

Are there any established salvage yards?

I need to replace the Volvo 110S saildrive on my boat and it's not available from Volvo anymore. I'm even looking at converting to a conventional drive system. If anyone knows of a salvage yard in the area, please let me know. Thanks, Jim

Allan's 340

Allan, one man's junk is anothers treasure! If you ever do get to your boat, you may take note that I am looking for some used winches to use as aft winches on my 340 (Gear Forum). Or you could just buy my 340 to replace yours and I could move on to a 356! Fins Up, Spirits High, and keep sailing. The casinos are coming back and so can you! (Double or nothing?)

Katrina Too

Allan J. Sorry about your Hunter. I lost my Catalina 27. Totally gone. I walked around areas of the Back Bay with images off the NOAA Satellite web site. Found boats on the images, mostly smashed into bits and sections, none mine. Also found hundreds of little bits of boats. On the bright side, it gives me an opportunity to move up.

Don't hold your breath waiting, ya vultures...

As a regular eBay buyer I expected a flood of salvage stuff to show up after the Florida hurricanes of the last 2 seasons, but there's been almost nothing--perhaps a half-dozen people selling just the odd winch here or there. I think these boats must be tied up a long time in insurance limbo before they get stripped for salvage. We may not see this equipment coming to market for years.

the parts and boats

are likely being sold to people who have an agreement with the insurance companies, Used to work with a lot of junkyards, and found that there were a few that had some sort of agreement set up with the insurance companies for wrecked cars. A few small yards picked up wrecks from insurance companies, but they were older models that were passed over by the larger yards. I suspect the boats will be treated the same. Ken.
