I have recently purchased a Hunter 38 with a Yanmar 3JH4E with the Kanzaki KM35P gearbox. The dipstick has a mark near the bottom and another near the top. Is the proper fill level between these 2 marks? I have been warned not to overfill the gearbox so I am concerned about overfilling it.

Gear box is full of oil when the level is at the bottom mark. Correct level is measured by resting the dip stick cap on the housing, not screwed in. The bell housing should have a label that provides the correct type of lubricant; either ATF or engine oil.

In addition to Terry’s comments, I might add to be very careful when tightening the dipstick; the plastic threads are prone to stripping and the entire cap will break off if overtightened.
