I own a 1981 Kalik 44. This boat has a in mast
furling system. I am trying to figure out if this boat was originally manufactured with the in mast furling or was it originally a standard tpye main sail ?

Guessing is dangerous but I would think 1981 would precede the modern in mast furling systems. Maybe Ted Hood or someone similar had a prototypical system for a custom installation.
Cool boat. I had to look it up on sailboatdata.com. Where the heck did you find one of these? I was surprised to see that it was designed by Gary Mull, designer of my much missed Ranger 29. The Ranger originally had roller reefing from the boom. PO's of my Ranger dispensed with that system and I've never heard a lot of good about it.

Our Hood Stoway system was factory installed by Pearson in 1981, so it is at least possible. Our spar is so heavily built it would stand without a single wire, so if yours is too that might date the IMF.
We absolutely love ours. I hope you come to love yours too.

I really hope I can get the furler to work easily. Right now it is difficult to furl and unfurl the main. I think I need to adjust the tension then it should work with less effort.

Maybe a local sailmaker can Rx a rigger who can sort it out for you. You know the solution is usually $$$$ but you might at least get a start on troubleshooting - $. Otherwise lose the furler and get some Lazy Jacks or Dutchman system and start to enjoy your boat.
Search the forums here. There have been numerous threads regarding the in mast furling issues. Fair winds.

7 out of ten times there is a problem with IMF it is operator error. There is a learning curve to getting it right. The other 3 times it is because the sail is baggy or has a big belly. We sailed 3 years with a sail that was deteriorating and we still had no real problems getting it in or out. Just take it very slowly, out a bit, a watch that nothing is binding. If it does, stop immediately (you are not going to succeed if you try to force things) and go the other way a bit till things free up, then continue.
Don't waste a lot of money on riggers and sailmakers before you've really become familiar enough with your system to know where or what your problem is. Worst case scenario, take the sail to a sailmaker for an opinion whether the sail is in good condition, if you can't tell.

Hi, good to see another kalik 44 owner! in response to your question the answer is yes they were originally released with in mast furling. how I know? I actually met the man who made masts for kaliks this year during our pacific circuit. We met him in Tonga.
