K-9 anchor?

We have a 68 lb English bullldog named Beasely who loves to go out with us on our little C-22. We have a Float Coat (well-made canine PFD produced by a company in Bend, OR) that he wears, but it had to be slightly modified to fit him. Beasely will crew with us when we retire in three years, probably on a Hans 38 we have our eye on. It will likely require a steep learning curve for Beasely and my wife and I, but I know he'll adapt and enjoy it. We wouldn't liveaboard without him. If there are any other English bulldog owners sailing with a bully out there, we would love to hear from you. regt_2000@yahoo.com

The Sailing Poodle

My Female poodle Daphne has been sailing with us since she was a puppy. She is 16 now. She sleeps in the cockpit while we sail and loves to tour the harbor in the dinghy.

Sea Dog

Sea Dog Lucy, our Boston Terrier goes with us on Sea Breeze whenever. She stays down below whenever the boat leaves the dock and stays there until we are tied up again. If we go some place and anchor, she loves the dinghy rides to the beach. When we are tied up, Lucy will stay in the cockpit and just look around. Yes, she does like boating.

Jimmy at the helm

Jimmy has sailed with us from day one. He used to dislike wearing the life jacket, but orders from the admiral cannot be disregarded on board.

Skipper and Piglet

We have two 2yr. old bull terriers that completed their first season of sailing on our Hunter 37. The only problem we have is that they like to jump off the boat as soon as we dock, which can be startling to the other sailors with dogs, not to mention the fact that everyone thinks that they're pit bulls! This year we will have the lifeline netting put on the boat. We'll also be purchasing a dingy, which will make it a lot easier with the potty situation. Other than that, they spend most of the time sleeping or hanging out on their floats with us when we anchor out.

To Heidi

Our Heidi sailed with us for 8 great years , ever since she was 8 weeks old. She loved going out on the boat, she wore her lifejacket and would bark at jet ski's. She would also laydown when we would get a large wake. What a great little dog... 1996-2004.

Two Wheatens on Board

Both of our Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers love the boat! When sailing, they both fall asleep in the cockpit and roll with the waves. As soon as our female is bred and delivers, we will have three on board! (Oh, help me!). I do have a question for other dog owners. When you do distance cruising, how do you deal with the potty situation?

Heidi Beach

Heidi is my SHADOW...

Our minature daschund, Heidi, goes with us everywhere! She whines when I go to the bow, she whines when I go below, she whines when I go to the head... get the idea? She is into sailing for the social aspect, of making new dock buddies (human)who feed her exotic dishes like shrimp, and new dock playmates that she can bark and run with (four legged). She is a brave little sailor, and hangs in there doggedly on every adventure! This photo won first prize for pets in our Regent Point Yacht Club photo contest last year.

Pressed puppies

Both my Chinese Crested and semi-poodle wear life jackets. Dogs with handles, what a great idea! After a season of weekends on the water, they've decided that a cockpit seat is just a very unpleasant couch. Getting there --with their noses at the pickup's window -- is most of the fun, though there are things to roll in on the beach.

lab chicken

My black lab/ border collie mix is a big chicken as soon as the deck starts to move... so he goes below and sleeps under a cushion or sleeping bag... when things are quiet he comes up and looks around, barks at a seal or a dog on shore he can only hear but not see.... From others I have heard that life improves a lot for the dog if you get them to wear non skid booties over their feet... pet smart has them... mostly for walking on ice and snow

Here's our Wheaton.

and we've added a black miniature schnouzer. We went to Canada on vacation last year on the boat withOUT them. Hardest thing we've ever done. Never again.

always

Since my wife doesn't really like sailing our english springer spaniel, Ace, is my constant companion/crew. As crew, he doesn't talk back and rarely does anything wrong. We have taken week trips. He loves to roam the deck when we are in the river, near shore or when the breeze is mild. Stays in the cockpit under foot when the wind is heavy. Most of the time he wears a life jacket with a 12" dia rope loop through the handle. Though he has never fallen in nor jumped in, doesn't like the water, I decided to add the loop so that I would have a better chance of catching him with a boat hook.

Pushing the Bichon in the drink....

someone asked for thoughts on this idea. Baxter the Bichon used to want to jump out of the dinghy. He would get higher and higher on the side, etc. One summer day, in a well protected cove with the motor off, I pushed him off the edge and jumped in with him. He definitely didn't like it and hasn't been close to the edge since. In fact, in the dinghy he seems want to ride in my lap more now. I don't think Bichons like water anyway, and this experience seemed to add to that. He still loves the dinghy. In hindsight I'm not certain it was a good thing, but I was always concerned that he was going to fall off or jump off the dinghy in a bad place. He doesn't really seem scared, just wants to cling to me. That might be more his advancing age (10). So, the outcome might be for the best. Think long and hard before you do it.

Buster B. Brown

Our chocolate lab, Buster, last name Brown because he's brown, middle initial B because Buster B"e" Brown, goes with us everywhere. He loves being on the boat because he knows that he will get to go swimming several times a day. He particularly likes the North Channel in Lake Huron because he is given free rein to do whatever he wants to do. We have a ramp that attaches to the stern and he can let himself on and off the boat at will.

Don't I wish!

Our golden retriever is very uncomfortable any time the boat heels, so we regretfully leave her home on any multi-day trips. But we miss her, and always welcome canine visitors. This is Grogan, the "dockmaster" at Zeballos, BC.

Companion Way Help

Our 60 pound Chocolate Lab loves sailing with us whenever we go out. As she gets older, now almost ten, it is becoming harder and harder for her to get up and down the companion way ladder. Besides the obvious of lifting her, does anybody have any alternatives?
