Chihuahua's on board

Our two Chihuahua's (Homer and Gizmo) love the boat. Homer is about 5 pounds and not really fond of swimming. Gizmo, about 3 pounds) will swim from shore to "momma" once he has finished with 'leave' to take care of business. Chihuahua's must have HUGE bladders as a trip to shore is only necessary about every 8 hours. We have a Catalina 22 swing keel so pulling right up to the beach is no problem. However, neither one will jump from the boat to the water. Gizmo will not leave the cabin when underway but Homer loves to go to the bow and sniff the wind once the crew (our two boys) have cleared the deck and the action from setting sails is over for a while. Both dogs sleep all night long during our weekly overnight stays. We wouldn't leave home without them. They are great burglar alarms and have even alerted us to storms moving in (which is another story). Good sailing to all and a hearty bow wow!

Sailing with Salty Dogs

The dogs have a special place on our boat, it's anywhere they want to lay down. Libby, our latest first-dog, loves to sail. The lee rail is her favorite spot.

Matilda

Our Australian/Border Collie mix thinks we own a boat for her pleasure. She sits tight while under sail and swims circles around the kids when at anchor. Like others on the list, she "holds it" -- good dog! This picture is her first sail. She now sports a yellow life jacket with handle on top that allows me to lift her in and out of the water. Alan

Evo dinghy sailing with Karisa

Some of you may have dealt with Karisa, who has worked here at SailboatOwners.com in the chandlery for the past 5 years. I love this shot of our sailing dog "Evo" and Karisa in the bow of our 10' sailing dinghy! Trevor

I would'nt go sailing without Matti, out 70lb. black lab. Many times it's just she and I(If only she could man the sheets), but she is great on board except for the black hairs. We don't mind the trips to shore when we are cruising as she is very patient. We do put on a tether attached to a harness when under way.

Dog Overboard ! ! !

Our Jack Russell, Muneca, loves our day sailer. She is in constant motion circling the boat from bow to stern tiptoeing down the gunwales. One day last summer I made a quick and unannounced turn only to find Muneca flying overboard. Since she has no body fat she always wears a life preserver, thank God for that. In my effort to turn around to get her she kept swimming towards the transom. What a sight, eyes bugged out of her head, paddling furiously and her tail going round like a 'copter blade. Wish I had a picture!!!

Magoo the Mighty Pug

Magoo loves sailing and Riding in the dink. All I have to say is boat and he perks up. He hates the pfd but allowes us to put it on him. He loves sleeping in the sun or lying under the v berth. He has no interest on the bow.His favorite spot is under the v berth.

on board relief?

For really long trips without land, does anyone use absorbant pads for their dogs? I have heard of them, but do not have any experience, and was wondering if anyone has used something like this, or has a recommendation how to handle when the dog must go and land is not in sight?

I had to jump in here with our Bichon

Moshe has been sailing for about 7 of his 15 years but I think last summer might have been his last on the boat. At this stage (15 years) the summer heat is a bit much for him so I'm doing a lot of lonely solo sailing while Carolee stays home in our airconditioned apartment. This picture has to be at least 6 years ago since I see my old Loran antenna behind us <g> and the shot pre-dates the bimini (added mainly for shade for the dog), davits, radar pole, etc now hanging off the back of the boat. Up to last year I would take the dog sailing out east to Block Island or Newport or the Vinyard where Carolee would hook up with us for a week's cruise. Then I'd drop her off at Newport and cruise the other three days back home with the dog. Most of the time he'd hang curled up on the cockpit sole but every so often had to sit in my lap and help steer the boat. He loved the three times a day dingy trip to shore for his walks. Front paws planted firmly on the bow of the dink it lookled like the only thing he was missing was a spyglass to call out course corrections. At 15 he's starting to fail now so we're constantly up on the Bichon rescue websites looking for another. One big change is that any new puppy we get will definitely be trained to indoor/outdoor carpeting <LOL>!

Sailing Sheepdog

We are currently "between" the boats. Our Polish Tatra Sheepdog goes everywhere we go and that used to includ sailing our former boat. One weekend when anchoring in Winter Cove Marine Park there were a dozen boats with dogs and when all owners went ashore we could have had a "Marine" Dog Show...Wouldn't that be a great idea. All paws on deck!

Spencer

From a dog's point of view, I love to sail! I go from bow to stern and tempt one to think I will jump into the lake! I will bark at dogs on other boats or on the shore. I have fun wearing my PFD, letting every guest pet me and entertaining with my duckie toy. I'm a non shedding, gray colored, two year old poodle mix. Call me Spencer.

Matey the sailor pup

I had to also respond to this. Matey our Shepherd Mix lives aboard with us on our Ericson 39B. We adopted her about a year ago ( she was about 1 at the time). We mostly do coastal cruising and daysails on the SF Bay. Usually vacations are spent streatching our distance down the coast. She'll hang with us in a reach at 15 kts (usually), but if it gets much more than that and closer to the wind, she heads down below to the aft cabin. She wears a lifejacket and boat shoes -- don't laugh, we found they really help her walk around when the boat heels and give her confidence. And we also have netting all around (except in the cockpit area and forward around the anchor). we love having her aboard. Sometimes it's a little more thought about what would make her most comfortable, but wouldn't trade it. She has a website of her adventures (sailing and others) if you'd like to see. It's at www.queserasailing.com We taught her to go to the bathroom in the cockpit on a piece of astroturf so we don't have to go to shore when out. It's amazing to hear about other dogs out there sailing, thanks for bringing up this topic. Melissa

K-9 sailing boots

And where does one get K-9 boat shoes??? And what are they exactly? flip-flops? sandals? Sperry loafers? I was hoping they would "show" in your picture!

K9 sailing Shoes

hehe, wouldn't that be cute, little doggie flip-flops. Actually they are Muttluks hotDoggers (believe it or not, the cheapest model). Luckily Matey was already good at not trying to take them off, but I think they are the stickiest (the only other one we tried was ruffwear)- they stick better than my boat shoes on our teak floor, and most importanly allow her to walk "uphill" as we are heeled way over. I attached a picture so you can see her sailing garb. The one I attached earlier was on her second sail, so we didn't have the shoes yet - or the netting. Melissa
