When my 1987 h23 was brand new, was it as bright and shiny as our new nighbor, a 2004 260, is now? Or did sailboats come in dull white back then? Thanks, Mac

Was...

She was just as shinny when she was commissioned. Mine is kind of dull too, needs a good polishing. I put a couple of coats of wax on her every year just to keep her shinning a little.

Try Poliglo, it's just amazing!!

So easy to apply and keep clean. Shine lasted the entire season and from what I'm told will last a couple years.

Chalky appearance

What's the best way to deal with the chalky paint on topside? How to clean?

Gail,

On the hull topsides, the Poli Glo method (cleaning then sealing) has worked for us. The Poly Glo cleaner is mixed in a spray bottle. The cleaner is then sprayed onto a small area of dampened gelcoat surface. I used a scotchbrite cleaning pad to scrub the surface. Rinse and check if its still chaulky. When you're finished scrubbing, the surface is allowed to dry for an hour or two. Then the Poly Glo finish is applied. It takes about 5 - 10 minutes for each coat to dry. For us, when I finished putting on one coat on the hull topsides, it was dry enough where we started to go around with another coat. 5 - 6 coats are recommended. A sheen develops after about three coats. ymmv. It took about 4 hours to clean and treat our Hunter 25.5 including drying time. During that time, the entire exterior of the boat above the waterline was scrubbed so that time included a lot more than just the topsides. Poli Glo is very slippery and not for underfoot. Be careful where you use Poli Glo as it is not suitable in the cockpit, the deck or anywhere else you might want to step. For those areas, I've used Johnson's Future Acrylic Fkoor Finish. Good traction, seals, gives a nice sheen and is easy to clean.

Thanks for noticing

Gee, Mac. Thanks for noticing. We're sort of hoping to keep her looking show room new for as long as we can. Last of the breed, apparently. Mike Davis Love N Luck

Thanks, Steve; Hi, Mike

Thanks, Steve, somehow it makes me feel good to know the old girl was a looker back in the day. Still is, I guess; she cleans up real nice, as nice as any at the marina until Mike's 260 showed up. For anyone else in the same boat, so to speak, I found a Practical Sailor article that for the first time gave me a good understanding of gelcoat and the effects of polish and compound. Found the article through the Liquid Glass link on this site's chandelry. Hey Mike, stop and say Hi if you see me. I'll probably be the guy polishing his deck. I'm in the third slip on the left as you walk toward your boat. Mac Boodle
