Just whistle

Hi gang,

Anybody using a fuel whistle on their fuel vent line? I bought one several years ago and it was missing until today. It was in a box with several other items I didn't want to misplace. It would have been funnier if there were two or three socks in there, too.

Anyhow the vent is next to the deck cap and I haven't felt at ease while filling the tank not knowing how close to full I'd get. The fuel guage is at the nav station so I rely on my Corporate Operations officer to give me an interpretation of what the guage is reading. I then listen for the gurgling sound to change especially when she says it's full. Sometimes I pump another ten gallons.

I'm thinking the whistle would be a big help.

I always fill from a jerry can. I slip a small diameter hose over the vent on the can and down the filler pipe about a foot. When the tank fills to the vent hose the can stops pouring fuel.

Yes, I use the Whistle on my last boat and my present Hunter 27. I find them very useful particularly since my H27 only has a ten gallon fuel tank and the air vent is located on the outside of the hull so that if I overfill, it drips into the water.

However, I find that when using the fuel whistle I need to pump at a good rate, not the very slow that I feel comfortable with. When you fill at a full rate it pushes air out fast enough for the whistle to work. Just a caution. It appears to be fairly accurate--I've never check it out as the fuel gage always reads full when I'm done.

But, yes, I like it.

My fuel level indicator is way behind the level when filling. I can add fuel, take the level, go for a sail and gain a couple of gasllons while I am out. Just something to know if you are using a mechanical gauge to prevent over filling.

We've got a whistle on our 356 and it works really well-very positive indication when to stop pumping-but you do have to pump at a decent rate to move enough air to be noisy

Thanks for the replys, I should be able to get to the vent line through the engine compartment. Hope there is room enough. It might go through the cockpit locker which would make it a little tighter. The directions say to install it within 12" of the vent so whatever works.
