Got hauled out today and this magically appeared. No groundings, no foulings.

Familiar with the Catalina smile from my old C30 but of course, this is an'00 310 and surely it couldn't be the Smile!!

There was a thread on here from 10-11 that I couldn't post on and there was no conclusion, so I thought I'd ask for your opinions. Sent a message and pic to Catalina but in the meantime, what say ye??

Stupid Gelcoat

I had the gelcoat on the side of mine chipping off. Had to grind it away and fill and fair it with expoxy fiberglass mix. That was about 4 years ago with no problems. With solid lead underneath I have no idea why they thing the gelcoat covering is necessary.

Jack,

That is the trailing edge right? Will send a photo when I can take one. I have the same thing on my 2001 when I pulled it this year. I thought maybe it was because I had to be dragged through the muck to get out of my slip. (very very low water)

I plan to disk it down and fill with West Six-10.

Interesting there must be a "Life" to the fairing they used.

I'm due to be pulled next week, I suppose with my luck the keel will be missing.
With the crack being on the trailing edge, not likely a ground would be suspect.
If you think about the forces it is surprising that we don't see more problems here.

And the odd cut away shape, with the trailing weight of the keel, this trailing edge becomes sort of a hinge point...

Yes it is. Been back to the marina a few times bringing up boats and I keep staring at it!

I'll probably end up doing the same thing...grind, fill and fair it....and hope for the best. Curious to see if it goes deeper than the gel coat. We shall see!

Makes no sense to me either but that's probably why I'm not an engineer of any kind!!! Hopefully it will be a fairly easy fix and, like yours, give me no problems.

I believe that is what they do at the factory.

Witz came out today, lots of Barnie's this year and prop was fouled, never had that happen recently, so all the traffic through the canal this year is bringing the larvae. Keel and Rudder all good.

Luckily I didn't have that many this year. Some on the prop and the prop shaft and on the leading edge of the rudder with a few here and there on the hull. Hopefully it will be an easy prep for relaunch, which is only a mere 5 months away!!

For your reading pleasure, here is the response from Catalina regarding the pics I sent:

The good news is the 310 has had no issuues and Every bolt on lead keel boat, every make. every model, (besides but inlcuding Catalina) will show a cosmetic crack between the lead and the fiberglass sooner or later. (usually sooner) The hairline crack means nothing and bottom paint can be rolled right over it. The only time it may mean something is if the boat was grounded and some water is trickling in, or if there is bit of a gap instead a hairline crack.. (light groundings on sand or mud usually pose no problems.) Keep in mind a bolt on lead keel is superior to the traditional lead sections or ballast put into a molded in keel pocket for several reasons we won't go into hear, but if you want to know just call me.

Since that is just epoxy fairing compound over the lead, it can be V'd out a little. (maybe a 1/4" x 3/16" and some new mix put in.....but unless it has to be done for a sale as a request, I wouldn't do it if it were my own as it is a waste of time. (again as long as water is not cmoing up thru the keel bolts to the bilge after a grounding.)

best,
