RichH just made our argument for us rognvald!

Course I'd try and not go the places he has apparently been because it does not sound like my kind of fun.
I guess the point is what decisions did you make (or fail to) that resulted in your somewhat less sturdily constructed boat being in 40+ knot winds for that time period
and
Apparently you made the right decisions over all as you are still here talking to us so just having a sub standard boat is not enough to get you killed. I'll bet it does put grey hairs on your head though.

The F9-10 was a totally unexpected 'weather bomb' that formed well off of Hattarras that was 'missed' by NOAA, NOAA Ocean Prediction Service, and ALL the weather routers. Everyone was 'fooled'. Sailing off of Hattaras is ALWAYS a crap-shoot when it comes to unpredicted weather.

A good friend of mine, with a sistership of mine, had Hurricaine Mitch 'jump' over Florida and 'pin' him below for 2 days just to the east of the Gulfstream ---- 'Mitch' violently changed course into an unpredicted path and 'jumped' into an entirely different ocean. He was 4 days out and the forecast totally changed 2 days before the 'turn'. They simply hove to on a trysl and went below for 2 days.

as we have read many many times, this aberrancy in weather can and will happen any where and everywhere. is good to know if the build of your shelter(boat)is up to the job of sheltering rather than exposing you. a decent sailor can get anything home-- but is htat the goal or is enjoyment of the situation the goal?? living the dream is more than bailing and sleeping and praying the boat stays together thru an event.
