Just something to take the chill out of the air

Sailing in Southern California we hardly need more than a little something to take the chill out of the air. Sailboat is 34 feet. Any recommendations on a safe portable heater to warm up the cabin? Other than 12 volt? or can someone recommend a twelve volt that pulls very little power?

Wallas makes a 5K BTU forced air kerosene...

furnace that is quiet, energy efficient and great for mid sized boats. We had one on our H28 and it did wonders breaking the evening and early morning NW chill. A simple flick of a switch was all that it took. A gallon of fuel lasted forever with little battery drain. Scan Marine in Seattle is the North American distributor. It is not portable. Terry

We Use This Away From Shore Power

We use an Origo which has 5000 BTU when away from the dock or AC power. See the link:

We bought a catalytic heater from a sports store

works great to get the chill out. Also use the trawler lamp.

We use Oil

Here in the Northeast when it gets damp & raw, we use one (or more) oil lamps to warm things up and dry them out. Another thing that we used to use was a propane lantern (on our smaller boat) that really brought the heat up.

I use the Heat Buddy as well.

I'm very happy with my Heat Buddy by Mr Heater. I provides plenty of heat for my Catalina 27. When it's down in the 30's or 40's I run it on high to heat up the place and then set it on low. It keeps it around 65 or 70 inside. It runs a long time on a one pound can of propane. You can also hook it up to a big tank if you want.

Candle

An oil lamp or even a candle can warm up a sailboat. We have a 32' Pearson and when at dock we use a small electric heater and this is enough even when there is frost on the deck. At anchor it is usually a candle or two. Be sure to make them safe by securing them inside a unburnable container.

Oxygen Depleteion

The downside of bigger heaters is that you have to open a hatch to get fresh air. A candle or two doesn't usually use enough oxygen to be a problem. Whatever you do don't wake up dead!!!!

Got a Mister Buddy Little Buddy Heater last year,

and it is just the ticket for taking the chill off the cabin while the water heats for coffee. My boat is a 270 so smaller than yours but heats things fast enough in the AM at Avalon at 40 something. They'll suck a disposable bottle in a couple hours on high but low seems to work well enough to last a few days. I got mine at Amazon for $79, Bass Masters also has them I believe. I never get much satisfaction from hovering over a candle for warmth. The buddy heaters will shut off if tipped over or oxygen is low. As a retired firefighter I find those to be valuable traits in a heat source.

heat

Ron; Get a clay flower pot, invert it over a stove burner and turn on a low flame. Very low fuel drain, only one fuel to buy and it work great.

Just got a Mr. Heater, Buddy heater.

The instruction manual indicates that a minimum vent of 9 square inches is necessary for its operation. The manual also warns that "Never operate the heater while sleeping" Nothing is 100% safe so I would like to hear from sailors that have operated the unit to see if they feel that with adequate ventilation the units are adequately safe to sleep with them given the tip over and low oxygen protection.

Schnauser

Our 15 pound Schnauser works great as hand warmer or in the bunk. Wouldn't leave home without her.

I believe that the

Mr Heater's will shut down if oxygen levels get too low and there the only units that have that saftey feature. Of course you should leave some vents open just to be sure

Clay pot?

What does the pot do for you? I can't believe I am actually asking that :)

Franklin...

To answer you question...."what does the pot do for you?". It gives a nice buzz and the cold becomes less important. So now add the cost of some pot to your cruising budget. And one more thing, the pot doesnt have to be refrigerated.

The pot........

The pot heats up and stores the heat and then slowly releases it back into the air in a more radial pattern than the flame alone . On your boat, it wouldnt do you much good. your boat is too large. You will need a heater. My Catalina had a propane stove, so i went out and got a Br. Buddy propane heater with a separate 11 lb bottle. That way if I had any gas left over, i could use the bottle for a spare in the warmer weather. I originally bought a heater and when i went to a propane dealer to buy a bottle, he told me to get rid of the heater i had and get a Mr. Buddy. he said that in adddition to a low oxygen shut-off it also was safer for some other reason i cant remember. Had something to do with propane burning thru a catalytic element. Anyway, Mr. Buddy kept my salon area in my Catalina 30 nice and comfy. Just about all of the portable camping type heaters dont radiate heat very far from the heater.

The other approach that works is

to make a pot of soup and bake some biscuits.
