Greetings, Today I purchased a 1987 Hunter 23'. I've been sailing a smaller daysailer solo and want to rig my new boat for solo sailing. This forum is all new. Reefing line, main halyard to cabin top, roller furling up front, tiller tamer, and cam-cleats of some sort for the jib sheets are the most important changes!

Old School
Congratulations on the new to you H23. You will have lots of fun with her. Reef early, she is a bit tender in a blow. I'm still rigged "Old School". When I bought mine four years ago I looked into running all lines to the cockpit and buying a furling unit. In the meen time I just kept hanking on the head sail I needed for current conditions out of the set of options I had on hand and hoisting my sails from the cabin top. After a while I guess I just got used to doing it that way and never bothered to run anything to the cockpit. Don't get me wrong, it sure would be nice to have when I'm out alone but with a tiller lock I can manage just fine. Have fun!

Tiller Tamer
You can get a Davis Tiller Tamer at the chandlery on this site. You can buy them at West Marine or a lot of other sites as well. You will also need a camcleat or clamcleat to put enough tension on the line to make it function properly. They aren't designed to let you go below and ignore where your boat is headed but a tiller tamer gives you hands free for long enough to haul up a sail or use both hands to adjust sheets. Pretty handy if you don't have anyone along to handle the tiller while you are messing with halyards or sheets.
