I have a columbia 8.7 and the wife says she thinks I need to upgrade or get a better boat for our use...we sail the gulf coast and mostly around Mobile Bay and Perdido Bay ...shallow waters..I have a 4'8' draft...sooo I have located three boats that have peeked my interest and will see them in the next few weeks...a Pearson 31-2 wk a IP27 shoal draft and a H290 wk...all have ac and heat...290 has in mast furling..she says be sure and get a boat that is dependable and that I can solo for she intends on being a spectator with a the voice of authority thay says I am doing things wrong..so any thoughts? I also go out in the gulf

The 3 boats you mention seem to be entirely different. Perhaps you should share some of your "must have" selection criteria with us. FWIW, I personally do not like wing keeled boats, so I would choose the IP27 which is actually smaller than your 8.7 (which is a boat I really like....why not keep her? Is the lack of ac and heat the issue?)
the draft is the major thing and the atomic 4 ..may need a rebuild in the near future and also I like the berths differant...I had a oday 26 that I loved the way it handled and the floorplan...liked getting up from the double berth in the salon to make coffee or whatever ..right now I perfer the hank on with the 8.7 and lazy jacks..but she thinks sailing is work and has recommended in mast...which I am not sure about ...the other part is I think she likes the solid feel of the 8.7 over a 1990 h30 I had...hence the looking at the pearson...but I do not like a wing under groundings..which I have only had one on the hunter

If it did though I think that I would take my time and look at a lot more boats. I actually like Warren's boat. I sail on a friend's H28.5 when it gets too breezy for my Highlander.

Even if she plans on being a spectator, make sure she's fully OK with the choice you make. Get her ideas of what she'd like in a boat.
What are you going to do with your Columbia?
She would like for me to sell it...it has a lot of extras....but yes I have always choosen the boat...now I have told her that the next boat we both need to love..oh btw moyer has told me it may just be a spark plug wire ,....anyway...still looking and still wanting ideas from all in case I miss the right boat...one more thing that I like but she doesnt ...tiller steering she wants to go back to a wheeel..hence the ip is rack and pinon i beleive
John, I've had a Hunter26 and an Island Packet 38. Hunter builds a good boat and the 290 has a modern floor plan and the latest in construction methods and materials. The 290 is somewhat limited for size if you plan on extended trips.
The IP 27 is an older boat but Island Packet construction and materials are first class. Our IP38 had a draft of 5 feet and went anywhere we wanted in the Keys or over on the islands. The 27 should be the same. The down side on the IP 27 is that it is a much older boat and they get a price that is way out of sync for its size. If I was going to do a smaller IP I would go for a 32. That is a sweet boat and the inside volumn is huge. These are still expensive but I'd bet your wife would probably love it enough that you'll be doing a lot more extended sailing.
We bought our IP38 there in Fair Hope. Turner Marine sells IP's but you'll do much better on your own. Just use a GOOD surveyor.

i have a Pearson 31-2 with a fin keel. Apart from that difference, i can strongly recommend it, plenty of accommodation down below for 5, roomy and very comfortable cockpit, we dont even have seat cushions everything is led to the cockpit so single handed is do-able. It should have a 16hp Yanmar so no need to worry about an old gas engine..
When you inspect it on the hard, look at the hull just behind where the keel joins, if its not been chocked properly there may be some hull deflection.

Thanks...I have located a IP31 that appears in good condition...the 27 is overpriced..Turner does have the listing..on the IP27 and the Pearson 31-2...I actually was high bidder on an IP 26 after Katrina at Sundowner got it home and a guy from Texas boought it before I got it finished...the H290 has all the equitment..but the Pearson has the pointing ability over the IP , displacement,and most of the needed extras, ...pondering here
