Just picked up my new (1985) H22. Question; there is a small 1.5" hole in the aft section of the hull. It looks to be a drain of some sort but sits under water. What is this? Do I need to plug it underway? Help me guys! Thanks!!!!

It looks like

I own a 1982 Hunter 22 and what I think your talking about it the cockpit drain. If it is about 5 inches foward of the transome (the flat back section furthest aft of the boat) then thats what it is. If you open up the storage compartment on the Port side and look back inside the bildge you can see the hoses running from the cockpit to this hole. I hope this helps.

Hey Roland, look again!!

Check the hole (it's called a "through-hull"). If it's plastic you might want to have someone look at it just to make sure it hasn't become brittle. A cracked through-hull under water will let water into the boat and... While you're at it, check the condition of the hose conecting it to the cockpit drain. The same could happen if the hose is brittle or cracked. This is probably worse because rainwater in the cockpit will leak out the hose and collect in the hull rather than going overboard through the drain. There are probably two other through-hulls on the boat. One should be near the bow (it's for the anchor locker drain) and the other should be near midships for the sink drain. Under normal conditions, both are above the water line, but if the boat is heeled, the sink drain can be submerged. I don't mean to make you paranoid, but all it takes is a minute or so to check each one and make sure it's OK. Peter H23 "Raven"

Thru Hull fitting cracked

I purchased a Hunter 22 last fall after sailing it under lease all season and last week I went to check out some things inside the boat. It is out of the water. While looking around at all the nooks and crannies, I found this Thru Hull fitting for the sink that had a 3/4 inch house type water valve screwed to an old plastic thru hull fitting I decided to check how secure it was and it broke off at the hull with literally no force at all. I then removed the remains of the thru hull and cut the valve off the hose. I now have to install a new thru hull and sea cock properly. I can believe I sailed all season last year with that contraption. I also went out and bought some wood plugs for next year. Once the weather gets better here I plan to check out all fittings, connections, clamps and probably replace them all. I have been reading up on procedures for thru hull/sea cock connections. Can't decide between Metal versus nylon(whatever). I missed the silver bullet on that one. Can you the 3 M 5200 when temperatures in the 40's? Thanks.

plumbing diagram for the H-22

I have the original plumbing diagram for the the H-22. I will send anyone a copy if you just email me at jhiebl@everestkc.net It helped answer some questions for me as I am restoring my 22 this winter as well. Jim
