Great Boat

John, I think you will not find a better boat for coastal cruising like the Catalina 36. It is tremendously roomy and easy to sail. I have owned my '86 for over three years now and am very pleased. There are only a few issues that you need to watch out for. The chainplates always seem to develop leaks, so check to make sure that they have not gotten into the decks. You will probably be rebedding those every few years. The keel develops the "Catalina Smile" where the keel meets the stub. Just make sure your keel bolts are torqued to about 105 to 115 lbs. and you should be ok there. There was an issue with the M-35 engine. Have the engine checked to either confirm you don't have that engine, or that you have had the raw water pump issue corrected. Other than those specific problems, it is a very sound and well built boat. There is usually no issues with blistering. A good surveyor should help you determine her seaworthiness. Good luck with your purchase, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
