To all the knowledgeable sailers out there, who have been around sail boats for years. If you had to choose between two boats a 1982 Hunter 27 or a 1982 Newport 27 what would be you're choice. Thanks, Don

keep looking

If I had to choose between those two boats, I'd keep looking until I found either a Catalina 27 or an Erikson 26, either of which will out-perform the two boats you're looking at now without sacrificing interior space.

I agree with David

I have sailed both boats you asked about, both are fine boats, the Hunter quality is about equal to the Newport, If you are going to race, yes the Catalina is faster, if not, either is a good choise if they pass the survey. Best of luck.

another thought

One of the things you want to avoid in ANY boat in this era/size range is purchasing one that still has its original Atomic 4 engine. Do yourself a favor by shopping around until you find one where the gas engine has been replaced with a small diesel.

Or go with an outboard

An inboard is so unnecessary in that size boat. The engines are so inaccessible that if you ever have a problem you have to be Plastic Man to fix it! A nice 4 stroke with cockpit controls will do just as nicely (assuming calm weather motoring) AND free up space AND lighten the boat for faster speed!. That said, if I HAD to choose between those two boats, and everything being equal, I'd go with the one that made me feel warm & fuzzy. LaDonna

A4

A well maintained Atomic 4 that is fresh water cooled is very much a viable option and certainly superior to an outboard in a 27' or larger vessel.

'77 h27 made us feel warm and fuzzy

And it had a very good survey. But I think those are the key criteria: 1. Which one do you like? 2. You must get a good survey. Any 20 year old boat could be great (most are) or a maintenance nightmare. Making a survey part of your purchase deal will keep the nightmares away! By the way, I though when we made this comparison, the Cherubini h27 (76-83) had more headroom in the cabin. But I still go with 1 and 2 above. We probably would have bought a Catalina 30 except the draft was too deep for our marina. (And I've learned since that this is a general problem around Lake Erie!) David Lady Lillie

Is There A Site Anywhere Close to This One

for Newport’s? The help and advice you get from this site would make the Hunter more appealing
