Just had an Earthquake...

It was pretty cool. About a 4.5. Funny thing was our boiler kicked on at the same exact time as the quake hit. So I'm thinking; "damn that thing is running rough I need to tune it"... After a couple seconds when dishes and the wood stove were rattling I realized it was not my boiler...

I know it's a lame quake for Californian's & Alaskan's but we don't get much quake excitement here in Maine...;)

It was pretty strong. We actually felt it on the boat. The hull vibrated with the rumble. Thought it was a low flying jet approaching the airport but I got out and saw nor heard any plane. All the boats were rocking.

Our washing machine had just started a spin cycle & we looked at each other as the house began shaking. Took a moment to realize what had just happened.

wow!!! i didnt realize MAINE is on a fault--i know about manhattan's fault lines, but, maine---better make sure those lobsters are ok....
4.5 is decent... is enough to scare everyone except kalifornikators(i still have the address, i can say that)... you gain 5 points ...
what is history of earthquakes in maine???

My wife was in the hotel bathtub once while visiting CA when an earthquake hit and all the water ended up on the floor. Just like being on a mooring when a power boater zooms by.

I didn't think you would hear or feel a quake in a slip. But in the Whittier earthquake which was a 5.9 in 1987, we were in Dana Point on a cruise. My wife and I were seated across from each other in our O'Day 27 having breakfast. The fish started cracking so hard we could not hear each other. We both assumed it was a school being chased, but then the boat started tugging sharply on her lines. I turned on the radio and found out about the quake. We had friends that were tossed out of their bunks during Northridge in 1994, so I guess you can feel it aboard. Of course, Tsunamis are a whole different story. Been through two of those.

Anyhow, be prepared for some aftershocks. The further you get from the event, the less likelihood.

I'm sitting in my bedroom south of Boston and couldn't believe how the room shook. My daughter came down stairs and asked "was that an earthquake?" Hope there isn't any serious damage.

Wow South of Boston. We were only 18 or so miles from the epicenter and it was pretty rolly... Never imagined it could be felt that far South.

We had one in Montreal last week. Pretty rare event here too. I slept right through it but my wife heard the rumble. We did not have much shaking though. I wonder if the two are related

Talked to dad this evening and he didn't mention it. Must not have felt it on MDI.

I've always wondered what we'd feel if there was a quake while we were out sailing on the lake. Not sure I want to actually find out though.

Everyone thought California was going to fall in the ocean. Looks like its going to be the rest of the continent. The Mayans might have been right.

Hope there was no significant damage. The building codes out here are pretty strict. Our oldest buildings are like 40 years old here. I worry about those beautiful masonry structures in the east where seismic activity isn't a typical consideration.

I actually just noticed the grout in the corner of our tile in the bathroom cracked. Will have to look more closely tomorrow...

Oh ya! 4.5 is a sissy quake. Those good ones like the SF quake Loma Prieta 1989 at 7+ could be felt in Carson City, NV (over 200 miles away).

The cows like those little quakes, it just shakes their utters!!!

Out west everyone is okay as long as no one is injured. We can fix the walls, driveways and roads, but it is tough on those who are injured or die!!! Our quakes are just a replacement for your hurricanes and tornadoes in the eastern US.

Remember NO ONE GETS OUT ALIVE!!!

I've blamed my son for the last two we had. I hollered at him to stop whatever it was he doing because it was shaking the whole house. We had a mirror leaned against the wall on top of a little cabinet at the top of the stairs and my grandfathers regulator clock in front. The bottom of the mirror slid forward taking out the clock and sending both down the stairs. I was prepared to ground him for a month but since it was an earthquake, I let it slide this time :)

Felt it down in Sharon, MA. I was working late and the windows shook then 5 seconds later the whole building shook. I went around trying to figure out what it was and then one of the guys I work with who lives a mile up the road emailed it was an earthquake.

We're all geologists so we were sending the raw data back and forth and looking at the fault line maps trying to figure out if there would be an aftershock. We're such geeks when it comes to rock stuff.
