We just got back from our trip to st Augustine, we left last Tues and got back Sunday we were going to go out the st Johns River and down the ocean but it was to rough. The intercostals was quite a site, we left with the out going tide and let me tell you it was good planning we got up to 9 knots over land gps. Really made a quick trip to the intercostal. We stayed at the St Augustine municipal marina and if any of you are going that way stay there. Great service and private bathrooms also they help you dock no matter how many times you come and go. We did go into the ocean the next day at St. Augustine and wow it was like a river but blowing 8-14 knots. Great trip and thanks for every ones advice and emails on suggestions. One more thing, the amount of sea life in front of the marina was amazing everything from sea turtles to dolphins right off the docks.

St. Augustine - wonderful vacation spot

We return to a little campground on Annastsia Island called Bryn Mawr right on the beach every year. That marina is where I got the bug for a weekender/cruiser over ten years ago. Did you eat at the resturant over the peir> They have little hatches in the window ills and bring you stale bread to the table to drop through to the fish. The water absolutely boils with critters when it hits the surface! Sounds like Y'all had a blast! Jim

Resturant - Santa Maria

Try Marty's (in town) for good steak, shrimp, and service. Jim

great town but

avoid the Santa Maria (the resturant over the water) its like a bad Red Lobster with a good location. Go for the Gypsy Cab Co. the best food in town and walking distance from the marina.

Lived Aboard In St. Augustine

Many great resturants in the city. O-steen's across the bridge of Lions toward A1A is the highest rated in the city where the locals go. Small, always lines and family has been around for decades, its a MUST EAT. Another great place is the Columbia in the heart of the historic district. Great Spanish food and atmosphere. The Santa Maria is a tourist trap, over-priced and no big deal. St. Augustine is a great stop for the ICW cruiser. City marina is worth every penny for convenience, security and amenities. Everything is in walking distance from the City marina. Between the food, great bars and the historic stuff to see, its a great weekend stopover. If you want the best "freebie" secret, drive down A1A toward Daytona and about 5-7 miles on the right (west) is Fort Matanzas park. Run by the Park Service they provide a free powerboat ride to and from the old Fort Matanzas that is acoss the river and only accessible by boat. You get a great historic guided tour of the fort, beautiful round-trip boat ride and hours of relaxing fun, compliments of the US Park Service. Check it out. The lighthouse is another must see in the area. Bob

We have stayed at anchor and the city

marina at St. Augustine a few times. Great access to the ocean and lots to do. The city marina docks are angled slightly askew from the tidal flow direction and can make for an interesting approach - perhaps why they are always there to help arrivals. (We try to time a slack tide approach when possible.) You will be lined up just right and things start drifting, or you will be asked to make a downstream approach to one of the slips. Timing the Bridge of Lions is fun too. If any of you want to travel further north, to Jacksonville - where we are, I recommend you stay at the Ortega Yacht Club Marina. If you are interested I will be glad to answer any questions. Al
