Im just getting into the live-aboard sailboat idea, and am looking for some suggestions from ones experienced in this area. What would most suggest for a boat in the 25' range that has ammenities such as small shower (does that exist?), head, stove, refrig, dinnette, etc. That contribute towards good liveaboard conditions? Also, im looking to moor off catalina island most of the year, does anyone know if you can purchase moorings there, or anywhere else? Thanks all for your answers in advance! P.S. I've found a great thing to all of you live aboard moorers out there that want internet access, its what im gonna use, go to www.goamerica.com an unlimited access wireless internet, that has access up and down the california coast clear out to catalina island! See ya!

25' Live aboard

Well Derek, you are in a most enviable postion. I live in Central California and that is something I have always wanted to do and haven't been able yet.!!! As far as the moorage check with the Harbormasters office on catalina Island, or the Yatchtclub there may be able to get you some information as to moorings and price, maybe a visitors slip would be more ideal for you , depending on long you wish to stay. So much per foot, per day. As far as a 25' liveaboard, I guess it's all in what imenities you want and if this is to be alone or with a friend? For me personaly, 25' liveaboard for very long unless I am cruising some where can get very, and I mean Very, uncomfortable and cramped. Especially when you start wanting to add refridgeration , hot showers, and all the amenities of home. Are you looking to have your own washer and dryer as well? ( just kidding). If you want to be comfortable, I wouldn't look for anything less then 28-30' range but thats me, you may be comfortable with lees room, but if you are you may have to sacrifice some of the amenities. Keep in mind Catalina is subject to some really wet and wild stormfronts at certain times of the year which is going to put you inside most of the time to ride out the front !!! Let me know how you make out and what you decide, who knows I may see you over there before the year is out. Happy Sailing, :) Dave LaPere

25 to live on?

I agree with Dave, that to live on a 25 unless you were a submariner or a dwarf, life on a 25 is very very tough. Of course you can read of trans-atlantic in 22's and other stranger folks rowing across, but hey can you just "envision" how they look and smell. 32' would be a minium and then you always get more then it sounds like you want or need i.e. "sleeps 8" a 30 or 36 Nonsuch (catboat-mast up front) gives a hugh anount of space for it's size and it's also easy to single sail

live on boat

hi derek, the most recent catalina guide gives the phone # 310-5102683 as the mooring service for Two Harbors. the web site shows a fee of $16.00 per night for boats 39 ft. or less.
