Happy to report I bought an '87 H23 over the weekend. I'm new to this game -- took a 10-hour sailing course in a Pico in August and will take the ASA Basic Keel course this weekend. Will be sailing in lakes pretty much exclusively, but do have a dream that next fall we might see how far down Texas' portion of the intracoastal waterway we can get in a week or so. Wondering if anyone has any experience at it. I know most people think a week in an H23 is too long, but we're not concerned about that. A couple of nights in a motel is not out of the question. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Mac

No experience, but

Have had the same dream. Make it Jan/Feb and a little farther south and I'd like to buddy boat with my H26. I've been trying to find a winter flotilla for a couple of years.

we did it

My wife and I have taken our H260 Baums Rush, to the coast and sailed the whole coast of NC, towed the boat down to Fl. and sailed to Bahamas, sailed the Fl. St. John River, towed the boat to Buffalo NY and sailed Lake Erie, spent many long weekend on Kerr Lake. The "normal" time we spend on the boat is 14 Days. We have a Fixed GPS/VHF,autopilot freezer/ refrigerator, TV/DVD,and A/C on board, 450 Ah batteries all powered by a Honda 1000w generator, works for us any questions or if we can help e-mail LKYusnret2@aol.com

Our h23 experience

We have taken our 1988 h23 all over the midwest. We have stayed on it for up to 10 days without 'major' inconvenience. We sailed 200 miles in the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior and 150 miles in Lake Winnabago Wisc. We mostly stay at marinas so this reduces the cramped feeling a great deal. You can get off the boat and walk around. We try to move about 25 nm per day. This is usually a short day of sailing and plenty of time to enjoy the area. Our background is tent camping and back packing so an h23 isn't roughing it all that much. We bought our boat 1000 miles away and have since trailered it several more thousands miles. I would not be afraid of taking it anywhere on the road. My feeling is the ICW in Texas would be a safe trip for the h23 (no first hand experience). We now have a 1993 h27 that is rigged for trailering. The absolute best improvement over the h23 is headroom. That 4'7" in the h23 got tiresome. We have had our new boat on the great lakes for 10 days at a time and plan to take it south for some trips (most likely the Bahamas) You might want to join a Power Squadron in your area for additional training. They are wonderful in educational help and building confidence and piloting skills. Good Luck and enjoy the boat. It is a good one! Ward

h23 a comfortable boat

I cannot speak to sailing the ICW, but my wife and I took our family - 3 kids grade school age and younger, for a week long cruise in the San Juan Isl. in Washington. Tied up on shore, in marinas or on mooring bouys every night, depending on what was available. Everyone had a good time. I think part of the issue with the 4'7" headroom is how much time are you below decks. We had good weather and sufficient time ashore each day so that it never became an issue. Go for it and enjoy. Texas ICW

A few years ago, I went down the Texas ICW from Matagorda to South Padre Island. The area to the NE of Matagorda is heavily industrialized and although parts of it are beautiful, if I had a week I would start from Matagorda. You will have some beautiful sailing crossing the bays and may have to motor through some of the land cuts. You will go through the Aransas Wildlife Preserve (whooping cranes and other birds). The ICW south of Corpus has many dolphins. Buy a Southern Waterway Guide (West Marine) and from there, decide if you need NOAA charts. Good Sailing.

Texas ICW

Mac-I and buddy sailed a MacGregor Venture 21 from Port Isabel to Corpus Christi one spring. Suggest going in spring when prevailing winds are SSE. We actually sailed off shore to Port Mansfield, stayed in local motel for a few hours and early next morning departed via the ICW to Corpus. It was fantastic and fairly safe for a newbie. We're gonna do it again in my new 260 sometime next year. Take the trip! Jesse Mulanax S/V X*TA*SEA
