How many of us partake of adult libations while underway? This is not a troll or judgement... just curious as we have a strict rule of no adult bevy's till we are anchored for the night... Thanks D.

Condition dependent

I can see how many sailors justify zero alcohol while under way. Any reduction in judgment can be a serious problem. Conditions can change fast and we all know about the "other guy's" abilities. However, my wife and I tend to adjust what we do depending on the trip and many other factors. But as a general rule a few beers along the way is quite alright (food too!). We sail for fun and relaxation. With that said a drunk skipper is a liability to everyone on the water. Think Exxon Valdez! :( Have fun! Elliot Everett WA

Nope...

I dunno that I would ever feel confidnet enough at the helm to add anything that might alter my judgement (or make me fall asleep in reality).

Not on mine

No alcohol on the boat. I'm responsible for EVERYTHING that happens on my boats. Although Imight could trust some of my friends, I don't trust everyone enough to have it on board, so I don't have it on board.

10:00 AM Sharp!

It's a tradition. I have always found a light beer settles my stomach. So, I have one at 1000 hours. That's usually all until 1500 or so when I might have another. However, on a 1200 mile offshore trip, we found that even one was something you could feel. We had one drink at dinner, but that was it. (I did have my 1000 beer.) Too dangerous at night to do anything on deck with even the smallest buzz. And, that was a consensus amoung a group that isn't afraid of a party! I think the same thing holds true of any overnight sailing. The level of fatigue makes the alcohol reaction severe. Actually, I don't know anyone who drinks to an impaired level while sailing, even amoung some I know who abuse otherwise. Maybe age has something to do with it... or maybe its Darwin working. Good policy

I will not sail my vessel with a drunk on board., they can cause damage, fall overboard, hurt themselves., or worse harm my working crew. Myself and crew will abstain until we're tying up to the mooring. That said in port I carry the finest scotch and always have ice cold beer ready for guests and crew.

Moderation

Practice moderation in everything you do. When I sail I will have a glass of wine or a beer, not nearly enough that it would impair my abilities. A good glass of red wine while I enjoy sailing only adds to the experience. I don't know many people who would think twice about having one beer and then drive, same thing.
