What do the P, E, I and J stand for in sail measurement? Or are they just letters? (still, they had to come from somewhere...)

I'll bet Roger Long knows ;)

Are you asking WHY those particular letters are used?
Yes, the why part, as in the history. Someone had to be the first to assign them their present meaning. It could well be arbitrary but then that would be the answer. Lost to antiquity I guess.

The limits of my knowledge have finally been discovered.
A humbling experience, no doubt. I figured with your navel architecture background you may have some insight. It's just trivia anyway, but while looking at new sails I had to keep referring to a chart to keep them straight, that got me wondering why...
