They're not really "sail measurements," per se, but rig measurements. They are used in designing sails, because, of course, the sails have to fit the rigging

Yes, the why part, as in the history. Someone had to be the first to assign them their present meaning. It could well be arbitrary but then that would be the answer. Lost to antiquity I guess.

A humbling experience, no doubt. I figured with your navel architecture background you may have some insight. It's just trivia anyway, but while looking at new sails I had to keep referring to a chart to keep them straight, that got me wondering why...
