Hello All, I just picked up an O'Day 22 and am outfitting a trailer so that I can transport the boat to its' new home. Does anyone have a scanned copy of the owner's manual? I need to know the proper procedure for how to lower the mast etc. Any help or advice is appreciated... Joe

Congrats Joe! I got my O'Day 22 (Greta) last march and had a great summer sailing in cape cod bay. I got a lot of help from this website. Welcome, we'll be there for you.

owners manual

Here's the owners manual. Its not very helpful for raising (Stepping) the mast but at least gives the correct rigging etc. We only had ours in-the water once this year after buying her just to shake down and learn what I wanted to do over winter.
We Stepped the mast from the bow primarily as that was the way the mast was Stored, this was easy with 2 people but I want to look at using the boom as a gin pole to pull the mast up.

Joe, good luck with the boat. As far as lowering the mast is concerned, you could lower over the bow or toward the stern. If you lower to the stern you'll need some type of a mast crutch in the stern of the boat to keep the mast from laying on the cabin which could put a lot of strain on the mast Tabernacle. It may be possible to use a short step ladder roped to the stern somehow or you could take two 2X4s and bolt them together to resemble a pair of scissors, and rope it to the stern inside the cockpit somehow. The mast will sit in the apex of the two boards. You would need to eye it for height off the cabin's closed companionway hatch. You would want the mast just high enough so it clears the cabin roof and low enough to reach up and take the mast out of the crutch. What you could do is attach a sheave to the bow plate in a hole behind the fore stay, and run a 65 or 70'X 3/8" line through it and attach it to the Jib shackle on the halyard. Raise the Jib Halyard all the way up and cleat it off at the mast. Loosen the back stay or the fore stay and pull the slack out of the rope and take it around the back of the mast and over the goose neck fitting so it doesn't slide down, and tie the rope off to one of the bow cleats. Then you can unhook your fore stay and bungee it to the mast for now. If your tabernacle has two pins holding it, you will need to remove the forward pin before you do any of this. Make sure that the wind is coming directly from the stern and that the boat is level from side to side. Undo the rope from the bow cleat while holding the tension and get into position behind the mast, standing on the closed companionway hatch. Then lower the mast back very slow. The rope is only helpful to a certain point and the rest is up to you. The mast only weighs about 60 lbs. I used to raise and lower my mast by myself this way and did it for years.
If you have a roller furler, have someone hold it in line with the mast as it goes down. A roller furler can throw the mast off balance if it is not handled carefully and we don't want any accidents. That's about it. Good luck and if you have any questions just fire away.
Joe

Indeed, congrats on the new boat. I've taken mine out just about every weekend since I got it in May and I'm developing a real appreciation for the quality of its design, she's easy to sail, very forgiving, handles light or rough seas and wind with ease - I really like the 22, I know you will too.

Just brought the boat home! I was able to size up the bunk riser measurements by looking at every picture of an O'Day 22 on google images. Apparently that works because I only needed to make minor adjustments to accommodate the hull. The great guys at Two Rivers Yacht Basin on the Bohemia River in Maryland were awesome! They really helped me load and secure the boat as well as supervised me stepping the mast.
Overall the boat looks to be in better than good condition. Rigging is good, sails are good, no hull or keel damage. Paint looks a little tired and the interior will need some love. I'll post pics soon but I really lucked out I think! Window seals and chain plates will need to be addressed but I'm now planning for the spring.
The $200 craigslist trailer that I bought was just about the perfect size for the boat. The trailer looks ugly but I've started to paint it just so it's not an eyesore and has a little bit of protection over the winter. Of course I spent much more on the trailer parts to outfit it than I did for the trailer. I got great help from the crew at www.EasternMarine.com in Newark,DE when looking for advice and guidance in matching trailer to boat. I seriously would recommend these guys to anyone looking for good info on trailer parts!
I appreciate all of the help and insight that everyone has offered. One of the reasons that I decided to go for the purchase of this boat is because of this online community and the wealth of information and enthusiasm that is shared here. I look forward to more advice and hopefully someday being able to help out future newbies. Next up... learning how to sail!...Joe

I could use a copy as well - just bought a 22 in October.

If you can email it to my gmail account, I will make a torrent and/or post it on a flikr page so people can grab it from there without having to email it around.

Thanks,
