Catalina 22 St. Augustine
Hello All, I've been looking for a trailer sailor, and asked advice from this forum about a MacGregor 26 (Forum Topic *Water Ballast*) Well, I lost the e-Bay bid for the Macgregor, but just bought an '84 Catalina 22. It's in nice shape with main, jib, genoa and spinaker. Looks good and is pretty clean below. Going out for my first sail tomorrow. Any advice regarding boats of this type? My sailing experience has been all larger keel boats. I'm looking forward to this lightweight pocket cruiser. Paul

Make the seller SHOW you exactly how everything on the boat works. Make him hoist and use EVERY sail, block, boom vang, halyard, sheet, cleat, winch. Also, go through raising the mast SLOWLY and lowering/raising the keel as well as launching the boat off the trailer and retrieving the boat and guiding it onto the trailer. This may be your only chance to actually learn HOW TO SET-UP, LAUNCH, SET AND RETRIEVE SAILS, TACK, JIBE, REEF and many other things you can do with the sailboat. Especially make him start, run, turn off and run the engine at all speeds to see how well it works. A replacement outboard or trailer can easily exceed the cost of the boat. If the seller can't show you how, take an experienced sailer with you for the demo. And, good luck! Novelman

Yeah...

I have a little advise. Wear your PFD! Too many reports of lost sailors recently. So be the man and lead by example. Enjoy your sail.

Catalina 22

If I had room to park a trailer (I have no driveway), I would definitely have a C22 parked there. I sailed on in Hawaii and they are a breeze to handle although not as comfortable should you get caught in a storm. Check the WX before you head out, and enjoy this pocket cruiser. Small boat, smaller budget, big memories. I recommend doing a google search for an example boat survey you can print out and make sure you visually look at each item. Don Casey's "Inspecting an aging sailboat" is the best $15 I ever spent. Happy Sailing.

Congratulations. You will be much happier with the Catalina than the MacGregor (I had a Venture 22 years ago, and it was not great quality) This boat will be more nimble (tender) than the keel boats you are used to, so it won't take as much wind to overpower it. I would put the genny and spinaker away until you are very familar with the handling chacteristics of this boat. My opinion only, yours may vary

My first sail!

Took my "New" Catalina 22 out for my first sail yesterday. Winds were about 25 knots and I was hesitant, but really, really wanted to go sailing! Rigging and launch took about an hour and the boat sailed great with the working jib and reefed main. Tacks, jibes and reaching were all controllable and simple. I'd like to add another reef point to the main and perhaps a reef point for the jib. I doubt that I'd want to sail a small boat in wind much higher that 25 knots, but with properly reefed sails it can be a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to sailing this boat! Paul

Catalina 22 are a great little boat...

and agree with the others that you will probably love it! I sailed and met a guy with a 22 about a month ago, and it does seem like a well built boat. For me though, I find the inside too small and the boat too slow...the 26s works great for me on both of those counts. Not going blue water, I find the quality to be fine for my needs...just my opinion though.

Either one would ......

Either one would have been a good choice, so you have to think of the one you now have as the BEST choice. Congrats and have a blast. Tony B

Well put Tony!

Hope everyone has a great memorial day weekend. I am trailering to salt water...been too long! We're gonna beat out past Fort Sumpter, beach on morris island and throw some toasts to our nations fallen warriors. Thanks to them I will be free to venture, and the only fighting I will have to do is against the platoon of mosquito's at dusk.
