I am a new owner of a 75 C-22. Any suggestions that would help in learning her?

When I first got my C22,

I had to learn about maintaining the boat (a 1978 model) as well as how to sail her. First, with a 1975 model, you will want to become very familiar with things that can fail catastrophically, such as standing rigging, rudder, keel and the outboard. Once you are comfortable with their condition, you can concentrate on sail trim, particularly on adapting to changing conditions. I would get Don Guillette's sail trim charts so you can sail optimally for various wind speeds and headings. On the Jersey shore I presume that you have the potential for very rough conditions for a C22, so lean to reef and change head headsails if the wind and sea state picks up. Good luck - you've got a boat that can be a lot of fun.

thanks pete...

the outboard and mount are brand new and all of the suspect rigging has been replaced. The only thing that I am slightly worried about is the keel where the wire connects to it. The wire and winch have been replaced already so I dont expect too many problems, otherwise she is cleaning up nicely! She is going in the water this weekend. Thanks again and good sailing to you!

Recently in your shoes

I just bought a '78 C-22 a few months ago after years of sailing on C-22s belonging to other people. I've had no trouble sailing it... but now I'm responsible for the maintenance! Two things I did that have been helpful: (1) I joined the C-22 National Sailing Ass'n (www.catalina22.org) and bought their technical manual on CD-ROM; and (2) I paid the $10 for Catalina Direct's technical manual (www.catalinadirect.com). I'm normally skeptical about paying $10 for a "technical manual" that I suspect is really just an expensive parts catalog, but I can honestly say that it was money well spent. Get 'em, read 'em, and start fixing stuff. Unless the prior owner of your boat was really on top of things, you're probably going to want to begin replacing and customizing immediately (the systems that Pete mentioned will most likely be your first targets).

See you out there

Hi Rick, I'm trying to get my recently-purchased 1977 C-22 in the water myself. Maybe I'll see you out there. Plan to sail on Raritan Bay?

1974 C-22

I recently took every piece of hardware off my C-22 deck to paint the topsides. You may want to inspect the through bolts that hold down the side stays. 3 of my 6 bolts were cracked on my 1974 C-22. Didn't find this out until I began preparing to paint the topsides. Make sure you actually pull them out of the deck to check them. Also invest in some new cotter keys for every stay on the boat. Costs about $12, but it's better than buying a new mast if one lets go (forget about the medical bills). Also, enough has been said on this forum about swing keel pin and swing keel cable inspections that this should be a given.

Thanks..

Thanks, the cotter pins and all ropes were replaced before I put her in the water this year and stepped the mast.
