Yes, they should do away with it.

They elected not to do it in Arizona and I believe a part of Indiana and things have worked out just fine. it is all to accomodate the merchants who sell more during daylight hours. The time changes at 2:00 AM because the great majority of Bars close at that time and changing it at an earlier hour would have deprived their patrons of an hour of drinking time but in the fall they get an extra hour to sell their wares. I don't believe there are any energy savings. Set it to summer time and leave it alone.

Let's Add an Hour in the Summer

Make the days 25 hours and subtract it from the winter make those days 23 hours. Summer will last longer winter will be shorter and Christmas morining will come sooner.

Well, there goes the auto funciton...

On most of my electronics. I have have to set everything manually. Well, at least until I get new stuff. My GPS had to be set manually as well as my cell phone. We should do away with DST and force companies to adjust their hours to daylight conditions. Makes more sense that way. Way to go Congress.

Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?

(apologies to Chicago) Rick, I was about to respond to your post, until I realized you had your tongue firmly planted in your cheek. But since I'm here: You're not going to get the Earth to speed up or slow down her rotation to accommodate your scheme, so you're left with some math to do: a 25-hour day means an "hour" of 57.6 minutes; a 23-hour day means 62.6 minutes in each hour, to arrive at one rotational day, noonsite-to-noonsite. That's going to cause many more problems that just "leaping forward/falling back." Can you imagine all the changes in any electronic device that has a clock? Benny, are you always so cynical? LOL DST was initiated by FDR during WWII as an energy-saving measure along with aluminum & rubber drives, not to accommodate merchants. That we're mostly happy with it may have a lot to do with economics, but there was no conspiracy in its inception. It's just a small quirk of daily living, like toll roads. Worthy of shrugging off, but not becoming exorcised over. Fair Winds, Jeff

My GPS insists that we are still on standard time

but in two weeks it will catch up with congress. Daylight savings time is based on an old invention. A man had a blanket that was too short to cover his shoulders at night but it covered his feet alright. He just cut about a foot and a half off the foot and sewed it onto the top. That way it was long enough to cover his shoulders while he slept. I never set an alarm clock I wake up when it gets light outside. On very cloudy mornings and during the winter I get more sleep. I go to work when I am ready and work until I reach a stopping place.

Here is the History on DST

I'd prefer just running on Zulu time. I used to wear two watches on on local and one on Zulu but then digital watches with two time zones came out that was much easier. http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/daylight_time.html

Rick, Nice piece of research.

For many years before standard time was established, towns worked on local apparent noon. Anti Meridan and Post Meridan had real meaning then.

Savings

I can't wait to see how much my power bill will go down thanks to our brilliant congressmen/women who decided to move up DST! We are better off when they are not in session, at least then they cannot pass any absurd laws.

I like Rick's idea...

But would like to take it one step further. I would suggest making Monday- Friday each 1 hour long and making Saturday and Sunday each 81.5 hours long. That way we could keep the weeks the same length.

Why not change Tax Day?

If our legislature can move the sun, they certainly can move Tax Day. :) Please consider writing your Congressperson and suggest that Tax Day (April 15) be moved to coincide with Election Day (first Tuesday in November) or vice versa. I personally don't care which day gets moved - maybe split the difference and move both of them to the first Tuesday after July 4th? Right now, these two significant days in the lives of all U.S citizens could hardly get further apart. Just think of what's probably gonna be on your mind as you go to vote the same day your taxes are due!!!! Duh! Dave S/V Pas de Deux catana 471-44

Standard time?

So if DLS time is 8 months out of the year, then why is Standard time still called “standard” time? Seems to me that DLS time is now standard time and the old standard time will need a new name. Something better than daylight wasting time. any ideas? - Chuck D

Tax day?

How about re-scheduling it to never. Never works for me. Just curious Peggie: was it always March 15 at one time, or was that a temporary change? Signed, Old Enough to Remember But Forgetful

March 15? man you must be ancient...

If you can remember March 15, which by the way was pre-1954, then you must be really old. *cry I had to do some research to get the time frame... "In 1918 Congress pushed the date forward to March 15th, where it remained until the tax overhaul of 1954, when the date was again moved ahead to April 15th." And... Ban the 16th Amendment as Unconstitutional. :)

I watched President Truman's inauguration

on television and I don't remember tax day as other than April 15.
