On Saturday my sailing buddy, Capt. Ron, and I took advantage of the beautiful clear skies and mid 60's temperature by sailing our boats into the Mississippi Sound. Shortly after lunch we anchored at Sand Island where we enjoyed the beautiful day. Although the wind died later in the day, we took advantage of the warmer temperature and clear skies. Saturday was a beautiful day...

in San Diego bay. I had guest coming down to the boat but they canceled. So I went out solo for 3.5 hours. Had a great time.

Oh, Ya, here in Canton Ohio area, it actually got above 30 deg. today, but my boat is still covered with snow ! So, you guys enjoy your "Miserable Days "!!

Oh....stuff it! :)

Ok, so it's not always summer where I live. But you miss out on one of the most wonderful joys that nature has to offer: four seasons. Winter, with its cold and, in some places snow and ice, gives us time to pause and reflect...and even time to enjoy other sports like ice skating and skiing. I remember a Christmas parade of lights when it was 28 F with winds 15-20...a story I will remember. Your Christmas light parades are the same year after year. And then there was the November regatta when I was the committee boat on a day when it was only in the 50s, but the winds were 35 gusting to 50...another memory that you'll never have, but a day I'll never forget. As winter gives way to spring, we see the miracle of the cycle of life as flowers and shrubs begin to stretch, yawn, poke their heads out and delight us with buds and then full blooms. No one who lives in climates where flowers bloom all year round can ever know what that experience is like. Our summers may or not be as hot and sticky as yours...but we soak up the heat and appreciate it. And in fall we enjoy wonderful crisp cool weather as we watch the leaves turn to gold and crimson and feel an electrical charge in the air that you will never feel...followed again by the cold and snow of winter that gives us much needed time to pause, reflect and put our lives into perspective again. So enjoy your life of one or two seasons--hot, and hot and sticky--that allows you to sail in tee shirts all year round. I might want to join you for a week or two. But I wouldn't trade places with you for anything...'cuz you can't really appreciate spring and fall or even summer unless you've experienced winter.

I'm looking to go in...soon!

Lake Erie report, no or very little ice in Cleveland. I heard our lift is broken, and that the earliest put-in-date will be the 15th of April. Are you kidding me? I'm going to find out if Edgewater Yacht club can launch me if the weather stays like this. I would like to be in for St. Patrick's day. Hey Ed, is that really Huron? When was that pic taken? 6 years ago I met a family, three kids under 5, living aboard through winter. They invited me in for coffee and I can tell you, it was one big slumber party for the kids! They were having a ball, and the mom told me it was like this every day!

I love to wake in the morning at anchor with a little

frost on deck and the whole world getting ready for winter. The calling of the geese and the power boats hauled for the year. My boat didn't get hauled until December 10 and will go back in the water by mid April, the leaves on the oaks won't be out yet. During the winter sometimes we have ice on the upper bay and sometimes not. But during the winter I have time to read and repair my gear. Four seasons are good. I have lived in places where there was a hot season and a hot rainy season. I could live anywhere I choose and and I live where we have four seasons.

lovely NW weather

I had a great solo sail on Saturday, the first time the boat was out this year under sail. There was about 10 knots of wind, it was completely overcast, and about 44 degrees. But it wasn't raining, so you can't ask for better than that around here this time of year!

I work Saturdays so...

My buddy and I went out on Thyrsday, great day winds 10 to 20 from the south east. Spent the night at Anclote Key grilled a 2 lb steak with mushroom and onion, glass of wiskey, then wine with diner. Great day friday wet in the morning, culminating with sun and 15 kts from the south the rest of the day. Sure glad there isn't any of that white stuff around here....Where did I throw that winter coat?

We got out yesterday too.

We even had a bit of sunshine on the way back in. Not much wind but enough. Not bad for Feb.

Sand Island Just South of Dauphin Island??

I have sailed past Sand Island safely in the channel and have kayaked out around sand island. But I was too chicken to take the sailboat in there. Saturday was a great day in Norhtern Alabama. We had blue skies near 60 degrees and 10-15 kts out of the south. Since Wheeler runs more or less east west we had the wind mostly on the beam from the dam to Bay Hill Marina. About 10 miles. Though I do like beating sometimes it is nice to sail 20 miles with one tack!!! The wind was strong enough to almost bury the rail at times. But usually we were just having a nice sail. We rolled up the jib during lunch so that we would spill our soup. All was not bliss we did have to beat a while and then loosen up for a broad reach...but only one tack from the dam to bay hill and back!!!! I have been surprised but would rate the average sailing in Wheeler lake better than Andrew's Bay near Panama City. We miss the dolphins and other sea life but actually sailing the lake has had better conditions. We want to go back to the gulf and will next year. But lake sailing has it's advantages. The biggest disadvantage is that you are stuck. Of course the reality was that we were stuck in Andrews Bay most weekends. Even though the path was clear to sail to Key West and beyond the reality was that we had to be at work Monday morning. So even with all of the potential to go sailing off to whereever. Most weekends we sailed around the bay just like most weekends we now sail around the lake.

I don't get it?????

When do you get a chance to go skiing, snow shoeing, winter hiking, ice skating? Heading to Vermint this Friday for a week of fun in the cold and snow. If I kept my boat in all year, I would never get all the upgrades installed. BTW, just got back from a long walk in the woods with my dog. The stars are out and the air is crisp with the feeling of snow on it's way! Mainsail, you are welcome to join us any time. Tim R.

The Sand Island you're thinking about is the one next to Dauphin Island. The Sand Island I'm talking about is just south of Pascagoula, Mississippi, approximately seven miles, located just west of the Pascagoula Ship Channel. To the east and just across the ship channel is Petit Bois Island. To the west a few miles is Horn Island. If you go on Google Earth you can easily see the island chain along the Mississippi Coast. Tim R I've been to MN in Winter

I must admit sometimes I am worried about gators and sometimes the bugs are biting. But fishing through a little hole in the ice will never compare to fly fishing for bass while wading in my local river. No waders are required!!! When we went ice fishing I had one thermal underwear heavy wool shirt sweater and then a heavy coat heavy boots big thick socks and I still froze.... Man I was glad to get back to San Antonio. Heck I was swimming in the local lake in Texas while my brother's local lake was still frozen!!!! When I want to walk in deep white stuff I'll go to Panama City and walk on the beach. Even visiting in Bostom last January I froze my butt off just walking from the subway to the aquarium....Very cold and windy...did I mention cold!!!! I have been backpacking in the winter and awoke with snow about to cave in the tent. I have experienced the joy of waiting for my boots to thaw so that I can put them on my feet. Yep walking in sandels or barefooted on the beach beats the heck out of that other white stuff!!!! Oh BTW I really do like frozen waterfalls...they are worth suffering the cold...for a day.

We went skiing at Hunter Mtn on Saturday ...

(that's in the Catskills of New York) after Friday's ice storm. My wife and I agreed ... it really sucked! When we got home, I scanned thru Sail Magazine (again) and paid my bill to the marina for winter storage. *grr At least the football game really turned the weekend around!

Frozen-crud on the steeps; 'sugar snow' in the shadows.... sugar-snow doesnt stay in place and quickly gets pushed to the side of the trails; and wet granular 'corn' on the flats .... tires the legs quickly. Snow making for most ski areas in the NE is over for the season and unless we get some frequent snowstorms, skiing will 'suck' for the rest of the year .... as all the ski areas will be doing from now until the 'close' is nothing more than 'tilling -up' and grinding the old 'worn-out' snow over and over and over.

We got 100" last week and will get 50" more this week.

I think Mt. Baker's base is 200"+ this year so far. I don't know if it will hit 340" like it did a couple of years ago or not but it's trying.

Hey Scott

I skied Hunter years ago. Do they still have the ugly cinder block base lodge? Of course that football game ruined my weekend :-( Oh well, they are still a great team and they will come out hitting again next season. Snow forcast for the rest of the week in the mountains of NE Verm,ont where I will be. Temps int he teens next week. Maybe another Valentine's day 42 inches like we skiied last year. Ye ha! Tim R.
