Just add ice . . .

Headed 6 hours north to Anacortes, Washington, and the San Juan Islands in the morning. Just need to get 20 pounds of dry ice, load the truck, and we'll be ready.

Spent $200+ for new radial trailer tires today. The old ones were on the trailer when we bought Verboten, so I can't complain, but I will anyway. :D I did notice that the ride home seemed to have less swaying/bouncing than with the old bias ply tires. Guess we'll see how it is on the freeway tomorrow.

Meeting up with 5 other boats for the week. One other Capri 22, a couple of Catalina 22's, an ODay 22 and a Mac 25. Should be fun.

You'll have to keep circling back to check on the Catalina 22, see if they can keep up under sail.

I've owned Mac 25, Cat 22 and now the Capri 22. No comparison for speed! But I did enjoy the Mac 25's pop top and large bed with the table down!

Have fun! Safe travels!

Different strokes for different folks... built for a different purpose (and they sold LOTS more of the C22).

This with my PHRF 174 here (and in the larger minority).

213!!! I'm stuck with a rating of 201 for my SRWK. 155% genoa with class spinnaker and mainsail. 201 is a bit too difficult to sail to so I tend to just daysail my CP22 and spent my racing time on Viper640s for PHRF nights and an ancient Shark 24 for one design racing.

yes, 201 is on the low side. But -- again it depends on how the other ratings are also.

FYI http://offshore.ussailing.org/Assets/Of ... dicaps.pdf

Has he high/ low and average for 99% of the boats out there. Note -- the highs can be distorted because PHRF Northwest has multiplied all their numbers by 1.2. ( A 170 w0uld go to 187[+17] and a 201 would go to a 221 [ +20]) I think one of the Lake Michigan regions ratings are based on statue miles.

If the PHRF spreads are 21 or less then it's somewhat "one design)" and tactics, and sail trim become more important.

I have an Northern California PHRF certificate for a standard rig, fin keel rated at 204. And, as noted on the Racing forum page, finally managed to win the PHRF C fleet at the High Sierra regatta on Huntington Lake after 6 years of trying (all with this 204 rating). For my club (Gold Country Yacht Club out of Nevada County in northern California foothills, not far from Lake Tahoe) we use the SoCal numbers so have 210 for Capri 22 SRFK and 270 for the Catalina 22 (but allow 288 for Catalina 22 without spinnaker). Tough to beat them...

[Spammer post] I use and I generally like the Davis Tiller Tamer but I by no means think it's perfect. The extra lines led aft get in my way and you do have to fiddle with the knob on top (too much tension or too little often back and forth). Though for whatever reason I've come to like the tension on the tiller, I can bump it a bit and bump it back but not have to constantly have my hand resting on it. And it does give you a few seconds when you need it. I'll admit to lusting after an ST1000 myself though now that I've tried sailing bigger water with an hour or more between tacks. Steering for me gets a little boring in those conditions.

Defender still has one of the best prices on the Raymarine TP ST1000+
http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?pa ... &id=211583

The simrad TP10 isn't even in the same ballpark as far as features...
But the 2 companies come close to price/functionality at the next level up, the ST2000+ and the TP22

I'm getting pretty good at tearing apart and repairing the ST1000+ now.. parts are still ridiculously expensive. $99 for a fluxgate compass is BA, especially when it was just the $0.50 compass holder that was bad.
Don't get me wrong the Tiller Pilot is one of the coolest things a single hander can buy.

Webb Chiles went through 4 of the tiller pilots (2 or 3 brands) on his recent Moore 24 trip from San Diego to New Zealand via Hawaii. He managed to get a couple of them repaired but by the time he got to Opua they'd all died again.

That said, I wouldn't mind having one for single handing.

Only a fool would rely on a tiller pilot for an ocean crossing... the only reliable long term self-steering device is a windvane.
Tiller pilots are for light duty use (meaning NOT crossing oceans).

We just did a follow up on the Single Handed Transpac sailors, and their equipment. One of the 2 Capri 25 guys entered did his own delivery of his Capri 25 down from WA to CA to the start... during his trip, he blew out his primary and his backup Tiller pilot.

Because of other reasons that sailor opted to not race... he busted a boom and several other pieces of equipment and decided it was too much to continue on.

The other Capri 25 sailor used a tiller pilot as a backup to a windvane.. Despite having seen consistent 40+ knot winds and busting a spreader, he had more issues figuring out how to jury rig his boat to keep sailing than he did with his steerage.

A tiller pilot is a day-sailing device to help in light air, and seas...
