I've wondered who buys them too.

Frank, I've also wondered who can justify the price of new ones but my hat's off to them. As for me I'm somewhere between "I can't afford the boat I really want" and "I don't have time to maintain the boat I can afford". As you know CAZADOR has been on the hard for about 4 months and we probably have another 4 months of work to do on the total exterior overhaul but I get a LOT of satisfaction out of turning a sows ear into a silk purse. I've spent the last couple of evenings in the shop polishing the stainless hardware that we removed for the paint job and it raised my energy level for another trip to the boat for a weekend of grinding and painting. If it wasn't a three hour drive to get to the boat we'd move a lot faster and spend less time home with our wives but you do what you have to do when you've got the sailing bug. I enjoyed the video of your group's trip to Pensacola. Maybe we'll be splashed and ready to join you by summer.

I LOL'd when I read this post, Frank

It's funny that 2-3 months after you posted this, we've been hanging out on my NEW Hunter :) I've told you my thoughts, but just for the record here's why I bought new instead of used. Being brand new to sailing, I figured that the warranty could be worth it's weight in gold. How could I learn to sail if I was constantly having to fix problems (problems that I didn't even know the basics about yet). I'm hoping if I can learn the systems while it's actually working right, then I will actually sail and enjoy it rather than constantly fixing. Since I liveaboard it was pretty easy to justify the expense (the note is not much more than I'd pay for a nice apartment...and LESS than I paid for a studio apartment when I lived on the west coast!) Good sail yesterday!

If I could afford a new boat...

I would definately own one. There is no question about it. Still Raining made some really valid points. If I had a smaller boat would I sail more? No. I still only have limited time with all of my commitments. If I had a new boat, would I sail more? YES !!!!.No doubt about it. We started sanding and preparing to varnish a few weeks ago. Lousy weather stopped us from varnishing. So, what do we do?. We take on inside projects. Well, with the boat half torn up in projects, the few nice days we did have, we worked on the boat instead. None if this would have been necessary with a new boat. My hobby is sailing, not boat repair. Our old AC unit finally crapped out. There goes another $2K or more, not to mention a few more days not sailing. Does working on your boat help by getting to know your boat better?. Maybe, maybe not. How well can you get to know an older boat? Tony B
