My late parents (dad was a corpsman in WW2 and later a battalion surgeon for our Marines) visited the Normandy cemetery in the early 90s. My mom carried a vial of dirt from Napa, Ca to the cemetery. Once there she spread it over the graves of our fallen with the words, “ May you always be under American soil”. That was the only time I ever saw my dad tear up, as he told me the story.
