Titled Topics/Responses

I agree with Abe,I have seen a gradual decline in the quality of topics posted on these sites, namely that more sailers are using non-specific titles. This is not a "playground" where unrully children shout out whatever is disturbing them. We are participating in a "forum" about sailboats. We expect to see topics covering details about our boats i.e.; rigging, motors, deck hardware, etc. and sub-topics of any of the zillions of miriad issues to be had with the above mentioned. This is our classroom, we both the students and the teachers, lets take better care of it. If you have a general non-sailing problem, you might find a nice 12 step meeting, a confessor at the church of your choice, the Better Business Bureau, an attorney, try Standing up and "be a man", stop whining. Think before you post. Oops, gottago the Princes says I gotta get ready to take her to church, Easter Sunday you know. Grumpy

It's a Community and the folks that are

regular contributors have a right to kid around a bit, as well as anyone else. There is also the religion, politics and angst section of the forum. I've thought of this site as "beginners' central", but have recently seen a lot more detailed input. I've also witnessed a turnover and am missing many contributors, who have either gone sailing or tired of repeating the same answers to the same "newbie" questions, and have let other folks take up that slack. As time goes bye, the archives hold more and more answers and it is helpful to see questioners directed there to find the answers and more details. Having learned so much, and having tired to give back what i can, I did think the rant question was pertinent, because unless you provision your boat way ahead of time for all eventualities, if you run out of $ and you can't go sailing on a weekend, then that's a learning experience, and VERY related to sailing. "Nice" has provided a tremendous amount of feedback to this forum, and also during a long trip down the ICW from NY to NO. He's entitled. Stu PS -- as a result, I am heading out right now to procure at least two more kegs of important (post)sailing fluids (pick your choice) before the boat will leave the dock again, just in case my allowance gets cuts off...

Grumpy, if I understand it correctly

this forum is titled SAILBOAT OWNERS. COM. That means you and me and everyone that owns a sailboat. The thread is properly titled and as such, one can decide to participate or not. If you just want to complain , I understand, but, a declin in subject matter is not what I see . I see creeps coming out and being mean and nasty. The quality of subject matter is great, and it is what we all are faced with everyday as owners(people). Sometimes it's a missing ladder or it could be where to get spreader boots. The subjects are all there for all to see (check heading). Great diversified classroom. If you want to participate, great. If not, then don't. If you have nothing positive to say or nothing to contribute to the subject matter, please go on to the next one. Theres enough negativity in the world already, we don't need or want it here on this forum. Keep your negativity to your self, unless you want to start a thread and see how others are going to respond.Just title it correctly. We have been here awhile and some feel as if this is their own private forum. Thats wonderful. I know, I enjoy getting to "know" other sailors. If they can't speak their minds here, where can they? This is for us to chat about whatever we wish to chat about. Properly titling it and with the correct placing. After all its for sailboat owners. Get it? Thank you for you concideration and your participation. Keep it up, Ctskip

Grumpy, I have learned that there are several ways

to improve the quality of any institution, place or group. I can complain or I can offer suggestions for improvement or I can contribute more substantial content to the environment that I find lacking. Experience has taught me that complaining is a complete waste of time. Offering suggestions without including help is false piety. Contributing more and better substance is the best way that I have found to make improvements. If you make the place more expectant of quality then you attract a population that will also contribute and the complainers will either amend their ways or simply learn to listen and learn.

Idea (probably not a new one)

Can the board be indexed with sections like: Maintenance Live Aboard Racing Off Topic Rants etc. Maybe that will help to sort things out and you can go directly to what you are interested in instead of having to read through the things you don't want to?? Me, I like reading it all. Sometimes the rants get pretty comical. I usually don't respond because I hate arguing!!! I have enough of that at work (a government job!!!;)) Just an idea! Anyway, the forum is great the way it is!! Jack Manning s/v Victim of Fate Atlantic City, NJ

It's already indexed

and "help to sort things out" always makes things harder to find. Instead of coming into a house party, and choosing the room you want to enter, you have to go to multiple houses. It makes no sense to start splitting anything so good into smaller pieces. Many Association websites have so many different sub sections, that it's impossible to find anything without having to click into ten different sections. The good ones post a daily message board, like this, and then a few separate places to go for historical access, with good search engines. This 'site has boat sizes for "categories" which is all that's needed, and this "everything posted" portion. What more could you ask for? It's simple, and it works. OBTW, there's already the rant section. Try it, you'll like it.

Oops

I hereby rescind my "idea". I have this forum's 24hour activity bookmarked and rarely go into the specific forums listed in the Message Board section. Upon further inspection, I stand corrected. My bad.
