June in BVI

I'm days away from my first ever cruising trip, to the BVI. I'm admittedly new to a boat that's suitable for cruising, and while I have a good idea about some things related to sailing, a lot about this trip will be new. Generally, I have the luxury of watching the skies and forcasts, and not going out when the weather is likely to be bad. The forcast for the next 10 days calls for about 50-60% rain, with thunderstorms on one or two days. I assume that unless waves and wind are excessive, we'll just sail through showers. I don't imagine rain in 90 degree temperatures to feel so bad. What about the threat of t-storms? Will the Moorings ask me to remain moored , or do most people sail through them, too? How has rain affected your cruises?

We've done eight sailing vacation charters in the BVI, two in October and six in June. The forecast you described could be used for virtually any day in that area. We've been rained on, a few times pretty heavily, and always had a ball. Showers are usually of short duration. There can be stiff winds at the leading edge of squalls that you'll want to watch out for ... but you're certain to have a great time sailing there in June. I've sailed a number of charter boats in the BVI and the sailing there can be superb! You'll love it. Take plenty of hats, sunscreen, and a few long sleeve shirts. Most charter companies will brief you on weather and where you can go and when. Most do not permit sailing at night -- and with good reason (hard to see coral heads). I don't ever recall being told to stay in port or on a mooring due to weather -- sort of your decision to make. I did find that short, intense, line squalls can come up suddendly. Be sure you know how to reef or drop sails on your boat and can do it quickly.

Always be prepared to lower the sails when the squalls move thru as is noted below, the gust fronts are sometimes very strong...just start the motor and motor thru them....they only last a couple minutes....have a wonderful time...It is beautiful there....

Did it June, had a great time. Crowds were gone. Weather was fine, wind was brisk at times, but nothing scary. Water was warm & clear, beer was cold.
