jumping fuel gauge

The needle on my electronic fuel gauge on my 1983 hunter jumpers around like its on acid. There is a mechanical float in the tank. I cleaned the terminals on the sneer in the tank and on the Back of the gauge with no improvement. When the needle bounces it tops off at what looks like the actual amount int the tank and then jumps back to empty.

Suggestions? Bad gauge, sender mis wired?

check your wire connections and make sure they are clean and tight ..and while your at it shake the wires and see if you get movement doing that you may have a broken wire some where

I've had that problem before, and it was the sending unit
There was a broken wire on the rheostat in the tank.
Almost at a full tank it would jump full to empty, then
It would settle down. Hope you find it.
